Hiya,

I'm suddenly having trouble connecting to any site starting https://. Judging by the amount of stuff on the web about this, it's a common problem, but there's not much advise for people (still) running W98. Might you be able to help?

Cheers, KJ

Hello KieranJames and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I don't see alot of problems here. Let's do a little cleanup and see if that helps.

Step #1

Download Cwshredder.exe and save it to a folder of its own. Start the program and click on the Check for Update button. If an update is available then download and install it. Close the program (do not run it yet).

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

Step #2

Restart in Safe Mode
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #3

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://www.fastwebfinder.com/iesearch.html
O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #4

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #5

Run CWShredder
  • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
  • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
  • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
  • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
Step #6

Reboot normally and run at least 2 of the following on-line virus scans:Bitdefender <<<Add a check by 'Autoclean'.
RAV <<<Add a check by 'Autoclean', leave everything else as is.
eTrust <<<'Cure' whatever is found, then delete if unsuccessful
Housecall <<<Put on 'Autoclean' and delete what it can't clean.
Panda ActiveScan <<<Accept default settings
If there are any files that cannot be automatically disinfected or quarantined then you will need to delete them manually.

Step #7

If you do not already have Ad-Aware SE 1.06 then follow these download and setup instructions: Ad-Aware SE Setup. Otherwise, just check for updates.

Start Ad-aware SE, click the Start button and choose Perform Full System Scan. Click the Next button and wait for the scan to complete. If anything was found, right-click on the list and choose Select All and remove all it finds.

Step #8

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Hi OldTimer,

Thanks v. much for your reply. I have performed all of the steps you outlined, and below is a new HiJack This logfile taken after this process.

The only problem I encountered was with the online virus checkers RAV, eTrust and Housecall, which were unable to update their definitions; I did manage to run scans with Bitdefender and Panda.

The various scans didn't find anything untoward, and the problem persists. Is there anything else I can try?

Many thanks for your help,
KJ

Hi KieranJames. Well, the log is clean so we will need to look at a few other things.

When this problem started were there any changes to the system (ie Micorosft updates, software updates, new hardware added)?

Have you contacted your ISP and asked them about it? One thing that can cause this is using a proxy server. The browser is currently set up to use the proxy server http=webcache.cableinet.co.uk:8080. Ask your ISP if this is the correct setup for their service and if not then fix that item in HijackThis.

Is it only secure websites that you cannot connect to or are there non-secure websites that the browser cannot connect to also?

Let's also try one other scan just to determine that there isn't anything that we are not seeing in the HijackThis log.

Download WinPFind.zip and unzip the contents to the C:\ folder.

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Locate the c:\winpfind\winpfind.exe file and double-click it to run it. Now click the Start Scan button to begin the scan.

When the scan is complete reboot normally and post the WinPFind.txt file (located in the WinPFind folder) back here along with a new HijackThis log and I will review the information when it comes in. If none of the above fix the problem then we will want to start checking the encryption settings and possibly do a repair install of Windows 98 (this will require the Windows 98 CD so let me know if you have that - not a Restore CD).

Hi OldTimer,

As far as I can remember, I hadn't changed any software or settings prior to the problem starting. The proxy server you mention is from an old ISP, and I have removed it in HiJack This; to the best of my knowledge, I don't currently use a proxy server to connect.

The problem does seem to exclusively affect https:// sites; I haven't come across a 'normal' site with which I have had any difficulty.

I have attached the most recent HiJack This log, and a log from WinPFind - I hope they mean more to you than me. If all else fails, I should still have the Windows 98 disk(s), although I will need to retrieve them from long-term storage (aka my parent's house).

Many thanks for your time,
KJ

Hi KieranJames. Both logs are clean. There are no signs of infections or malware at this time.

You can take a look at this Microsoft artivle regarding the problem and follow the steps there. If the problem persists then I would suggest posting a question in the Internet Browser forum and see what they have to say.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q175722/

Cheers.
