I have an odd problem in that virus and rootkit detects run clean but SOMETHING is causing the windows system slow to respond. I ran MBAM and it found Vundo however subsequent scans run clean. DDS starts, but never finishes, ie I don't see any logs created. I can run hijack, but it 'stops' halfway through with a message 'The action cannot be completed because the other application is busy. Choose 'switch to' to activate the busy application and correct the problem', but does eventually finish in 15 minutes or so. Root Repeal didn't find anything except 2 old tasks that I deleted.

Here's what I can deduce:
1. When windows launches, one of the svchost.exe processes is considerably bigger than the others. I find if i shut this process down (within like 2 minutes past POST), then windows (Start button, win explorer, file save/open dialogs) runs somewhat normally. I downloaded process explorer and the one that I think I'm shutting down contains a variety of dll's that include Windows Audio, Themes, Netman, DHCP client, etc.
2. Sometimes even when this svchost is closed, the taskbar disappears and I can't launch anything unless I launch new task within taskman. Additionaly, even if the taskbar is showing, I can't switch the active window by clicking on it, I have to "ALT-TAB" to switch.
3. What's weird is the INTERNET is fine, no popups, redirects or hijacks. The only time if flakes is when i need something from the file system ie attaching a file. The file dialog TAKES FOREVER to come up. The other weird thing is IF on the file dialogs, if I type in the directory, it pops right up. If I click on (in windows explorer) My computer, I might as well shut it down.
4. Video/Audio/network activity and playback are normal.

I'm completely at a loss for what this could be. Processor is hardly tasked and mem use is normal. Windows will only respond like every 5 minutes and then only for a second or two. But then, every app that I've clicked on in the taskbar comes back, start but expands and the volume control all run at the same time (like they've been stacked up on the windows message stack).

I've removed some software with included a bunch of old virus software my roomate loaded. It included symantec and i scanned the registry for any latent keys and deleted them. I also noticed some services that were launching that don't apply, ie Lightscribe (I don't have a DVD burner attached anymore) and removed them.

Tried various things all day, but if i go into msconfig and do minimal startup, everything runs fine. Windows audio is not loaded and when i try to start it, it says that the process tree isn't enabled.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE
