I have Windows XP SP3 Media Edition on a Dell XPS400 and I have an error message that appears stating Google Installer has encountered a problem and must shut down. My Macafee virus protection will not start, and neither will combofix, spybot, etc. The computer locks up frequently. Here is what I see:

AppName: googleupdate.exe AppVer: 1.2.131.7 ModName: googleupdate.exe
ModVer: 1.2.131.7 Offset: 00006eef

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
  • Please download OTL from following mirror:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized
In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

To follow-up on the Google error message. I have "slaved" the HDD from the infected machine into a well protected personal machine. I have run spybot, Macafee, and Malwarebytes only on that drive. I am allowing the programs to "fix" whatever they find. I am also running your referred scan program and will be forwarding to you soon. I will re-install back into the original PC and see what happens. Any feedback is appreciated.

Hi,

I can't even begin to think of all the things that may or will go wrong with that approach. :(

Make sure you at least keep all the logs from the programs you ran. Do not delete any detected files permanently since we may need to restore them later.

Once you have the hard disk back into the original PC, if it is still booting, please provide the logs from OTL to see what is left. I need the OTL logs from the infected machine, not the hdd slaved into a clean machine.

regards myrti

Hi,

please do not attach the logs, but post them in your replies.

Were you able to boot into normal mode before you removed the hard disk?

What programs did you scan the hard disk with? Could I see the logs from that? What was removed?

Can you please run a scan with gmer (in safemode):

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.

Hi Again!

Q: Were you able to boot into normal mode before you removed the hard disk?
A: Yes, but the Google Installer error message would display, and most of the time the system would freeze. The rest of the time it would be very slow, then freeze after the second Google Installer Error Message would appear. (I did remove all of the Google programs when I first got the machine)

Q: What programs did you scan the hard disk with? Could I see the logs from that? What was removed?
A: Scanned with McAfee, and Malwarebytes, but after the previous posts, I stopped the scans. I mis-spoke earlier, I did NOT remove or quarantine anything. I then put the HDD back into the original machine.

Q: Can you please run a scan with gmer (in safemode):
A: Running for some time now. I will post results when it finishes.

Q: Do I need to post the results from the OTL scans on my next post as well?

Hi,

So you did not change anything while the hard disk was slaved to your clean PC? What exactly keeps you from booting into normal mode? Does it give you a blue screen of death? If so can you please post the error message?

the OTL logs are not really needed, however I would appreciate it if you could copy them in your next reply. It makes it either to reference them then. You could just repaste the logs you ran on the machine earlier.

Let me know if gmer does not finish the scan... it usually is pretty quick, but if it takes over a couple of hours, than it is not working.

Here is what I have thus far:

Q: So you did not change anything while the hard disk was slaved to your clean PC? What exactly keeps you from booting into normal mode? Does it give you a blue screen of death? If so can you please post the error message?

A: No I did not change anything while it was slaved. I can boot into normal mode without any problem. As soon as the desktop appears and windows is finishing the application opening process, that's when the Google Installer Error pops up and shortly after that, the system will freeze up.

Hi,

your gmer log is sporting a lovely rootkit. It is very probably a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you want to clean, then please provide a log from ComboFix in your next reply:

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper
