Posted 30 December 2009 - 12:40 PM

My McAfee software identified a trojan virus that it can't remove. It is Vundo.ge.bw.

I tried some instructions I found for Vundo.GC which made a rather dramatic improvement. However I am still having the following problems;

1. Internet Explorer shuts down almost as soon as it comes on.
2. The Microsoft Update won't stay on. I keep turning it on and it automatically shuts off. I think this is how the PC got infected in the first place. I was able to update Windows yesterday with some critical updates.
3. mabemime.dll seems to be a virus but I can't remove this using the HighJackThis software.
4. I am having a Visual Basic macro error message. I am trying to figure out if the firewalls are affecting this somehow or if it is related to this virus

Any assistance you can give me would be appreciated.

I tried RootRepeal several times but it kept crashing on me. I could never get the report require. The best I can do is submit a screen shot for you to review. See the attached.

Finally I was able to get Rootrepeal to work. It has been so long since I posted this things have changed so I ran the dds tool again so pleas use this one in your analysis.

My symptoms have changed a little. I don't get any error messages during start-up. I struggled trying to get your tools to run. I was finally able to get them to run but I had to do the following by trial an error. Not necessarily in this order but maybe this will help you in your analysis.

1. I turned off all programs that started up automatically upon start up. I had IE, Outlook, a database server, WD Back-up manager, McAfee firewall and antivirus, PC Tools Spyware, an Access VB macro, PCTools Registry mechanic.

2. One problem that the PC ran so slow that I could hardly do anything. When I was able to run RootRepeal it would take hours. The few times it got to the end it would freeze up and not allow me to save the reports. One thing I noticed was that the software spent a lot of time going thru McAfee quarantine files and windows temp files. I deleted these several times but the folders would fill up again(particularly the quarantine files). There were so many quarantine files that the only way I could delete them was using dos command prompt (I had to re-learn how to do this). Even this way it took a while.

3. Once all of the other start-up programs were turned off I noticed that McAfee was still coming up. I could not turn it off no matter how hard I tried. Since this was the only thing that was turning on I started to see the McAfee warning that a Vundo virus was found and it identified a dll file as the problem. The pick-box allowed me to restart and scan again or close the alert. Restart is useless since you get the same message over again and I tried closing the alert but I would just get an endless stream of these alerts.

4. Since task manager showed McAfee was eating up all of the CPU processing time I realized this was why I could not run anything else. The alerts did not allow me to access McAfee to shut it down. I restarted the PC on Safe Mode and uninstalled McAfee. I also went in and cleared out the quarantine folder and temp folder.

5. With McAfee out of the way I was able to restart normally and was able to run DDS and RootRepeal rather smoothly. The new DDS report below. However I did have one error message when I ran RootRepeal. It was "Error- Invalid PE image found." I clicked OK on the error message and was able to run the RootRepeal program just fiine but I thought I would mention this. I ran it twice to see if I got the error and got the same error twice.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
  • Please download OTL from following mirror:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized
In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.
