I have been troubled with this rogue scanner for months I cant shake it.I get a popup saying I have spyware or a virus, and when I click to close the window it starts a scanner in a blue and pink box that looks similar to a my computer window.I have to use ctl alt del to bring up the task manager and shut it down.I see no processes I can relate to it,and the task is listed as `my computer online scan`

If I restore my last ie session it goes right back to it also.

Can someone please try to help me with this? Im using windows xp pro x64 So far I tried Malwarebytes and superantispyware.

As no logs have been posted, I am shifting this topic from the specialized HiJack This forum to the Am I Infected forum.

==>PLEASE DO NOT NOW POST LOGS<== unless a log is specifically requested.

Please describe the issues you are experiencing with your computer.

regards, Elise

Does the original post not describe the problem?

Sorry, that is a standard note we post after a log is moved to see if you are still there

Are you able to update MBAM to its latest definitions and run a quick scan?

regards, Elise

It shows up in the task manager as `my computer online scan` I suspected it was virus doctor but Im not sure.I cant find any of the files associated with virus doctor.I was thinking it was an acrobat reader exploit, whenever I had acrobat reader removed it didnt seem to happen,I tried 9.2 or 9.3 and it came back.I took acrobat reader off and it seemed to go away, until I put acrobat reader 4 on thinking maybe it was safe. But it occurs only once every few days or so, so irregularly that I cant be sure.

Lets clean and doublecheck some more things to be sure

TFC
--------
Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop.
(TFC only cleans temp folders. It will not clean URL history, prefetch, or cookies).
Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job.
Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine, if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean

NOTE:
It's normal after running TFC cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

TFC (Temp File Cleaner) will clear out all temp folders for all user accounts (temp, IE temp, java, FF, Opera, Chrome, Safari), including Administrator, All Users, LocalService, NetworkService, and any other accounts in the user folder.

SUPERANTISPYWARE
-----------------------------
Please download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If it will not start, go to Start > All Prgrams > SUPERAntiSpyware and click on Alternate Start.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here. Double-click on the hyperlink for Download Installer and save SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to your desktop. Then double-click on SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to install the definitions.)
  • In the Main Menu, click the Preferences... button.
  • Click the "General and Startup" tab, and under Start-up Options, make sure "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts" box is unchecked.
  • Click the "Scanning Control" tab, and under Scanner Options, make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program.
  • Do not run a scan just yet.
Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with SUPERAntiSpyware as follows:
  • Launch the program and back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan and click "Next".
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.

regards, Elise

I couldnt get to safe mode with f8 some boot device menu instead,so I used msconfig to get safeboot.

PLEASE NEVER DO THAT AGAIN!!!!! You risk ending up in a reboot loop and not being able to boot into Windows Normal mode anymore!!

If you have a problem following the steps I give you, just post back here, so I can give you a work around.

For now, please start Super Antispyware in normal mode, click the Preferences button, click the Repairs tab, in the list scroll down to Repair Broken SafeBoot Key and click the Repair button.

Let me know if you are able to boot into safe boot now using the f8 method. If not, let me know, but don't do anything else!

There is only a repair for the browser listed no others are there.Since the f8 brings up a boot devices menu is there another key maybe for safe mode?

The repair tab in Super Antispyware's Preferences has like 20 options. You have to scroll down in the list. Please make sure you looked in the right place.

F8 is the only normal way to get in safe mode. I am not sure what you are asking here.

regards, Elise

From what I read its just that I was pressing f8 at the wrong time. But my superantispyware has no repairs listed so theres nothing to scroll there.Should I try reinstalling it? Or is because Im using the free version?

Anyway I can get in safe mode with f8.The first ime I use f8 during the boot up I get the boot devices selection screen.I hit escape to boot using defaults, and then hold f8 again.I get the boot options screen where I can select safe mode then.Im not sure if this is because I have the raid drivers installed or if its because Im using xp x64

It might have to do with 64 bit systems. I will have to look into that.

Please give me some time for that. For now, please do the following:

ESET ONLINE SCANNER

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan

Im running eset now it will take a while to scan archives.

One other issue possibly related maybe not, under internet options it shows the location of my temp internet files in admin local settings, but the actual folder is in my windows directory in
windows/system32/config/systemprofile/local settings. I never saw that before. I dont even see a shortcut for it in admin local settings folder
