The windows thing moving slow might happen if you do not have the correct video driver installed.

I don't see any reason to remove the backup utility.

The only drivers listed on the site for your computer....

http://www.emachines.com/support/drivers.html

for your computer are the ones for the Chipset Driver (Packge), Realtek Audio Driver, and Nvidia VGA Driver.

Not sure those ones are going to help you connect to the interent but that link above is the best one for their drivers site, however, you do have to enter in all the information for your system.

Since you cannot get there on the computer that is having problems, and if you cannot download them using the PS3, you will have to download the drivers to another computer and transfer them over to the computer you need them for.

The thing that I am wondering about is you say you do not have a modem, do you mean in the computer that you are having problems with?

Windows Xp Media Center is Basicly Windows Xp Pro minus the ability to connect to a Domain Controller plus the added media packages for multimedia audio and video.

If you still have hardware that does not have drivers like the PCI Simple Communication Device and such, and Emachines does not have them on their website, you will need one to do one of two things. Emachines came with a Drivers Installation CD. If you have it, you will need to insert it and let it finish the driver installation portion of reinstalling your operating system. If you do not, there's still hope. If you can go into the device manager and the the Hardware ID's ( pictured below ) then post them here we can help you find your drivers.

Go into the device manager and right click on the pci communication device. Click on reinstall driver and point it to the folder named Windows XP 127A1025 HSF Drivers Signed. The computer will search the folder for the inf file and should load the drivers needed for your modem.

Hope this helps,

***UPDATE***

Looking for an alternate driver. Sorry....it is the incorrect one.

Stick around I'll find it.

***UPDATE***

The driver you are looking for is available here.

When you get there, click on the download tab. I'm sorry but you'll have to go through a few ads to get to the download link itself but this one will work. I read the INF file and it is exactly for your modem.

Sorry about the confusion.
