Hi,

I was probably infected on the night of Dec 13/14th. Noticed that my desktop background had changed to a green background with black text box saying that my computer has been infected. Since I had to go on vacation I just pulled the internet cord out to prevent additional problemware from getting installed on my computer or sending my information over to other computers on the net.

I have come back from vacation now and am now beginning the work required to fix my pc.

First things that I have noticed -
  • I don't have access to Task manager, rightclicking in the Tray shows me a grayed out Task Manager option
  • Regedit doesn't seem to work. It displays a message "Registry Editing has been disabled by your administrator". But I'm running in an administrator account.
  • I can't boot to Safe Mode. When I tried, it displayed a BSOD.
  • I can boot normally and displays my normal WinXP screen with a listing of all the users. However when logging in with password, prior to showing my desktop it shows a dialog box saying that I've been infected by "Worm.Win32.Netsky" and assigns it a '5' rating (from a 0-5 scale). Closing the dialog (using the x) leads me to my desktop whose background is now different.
  • There is a program called "Internet Security 2010" that automatically starts up and is warning me of multiple infections. And is also popping up messages about detecting spyware in SpyBot.Bank32.dll and also detecting attacks from various internet connected computers using the smss.exe exploit (even tho' I have disconnected my pc from the internet).
  • I use McAfee Internet Security 2009. McAfee Security Center reports in my 'Protection Status' that my computer is not protected. On clicking Fix, it displays a dialog box stating that "One or more problems require your response".
  • I started the McAfee Virus Scan which is running very slowly but hasn't found a single problem even tho' it is 87% complete. I am concerned that even tho' I was running a special custom scan, still some directories might have been added to a "do not scan" list.
At the moment, I am using a laptop to connect to the internet. I have a 4gb USB key that I intend to use to download and transfer programs and log files between my infected computer and my laptop.

Would somebody please help with ideas on how to proceed?

I tried to create the logs with DDS but the Notepad windows never appeared for DDS.TXT and ATTACH.TXT. After running DDS, a dialog box would appear on How to post the logs but the Notepads for the two files never appeared.

I was able to install HijackThis. Here's logfile from Hijack This.

RootRepeal crashes on running with a message saying that it's trying to write to 0x00000000.

So, I don't think I will be able to generate either the DDS or RootRepeal scans.

Is there a temp disk where DDS creates the two files that I could check. It seems that Notepad windows for me seem to be invisible. (The 2 notepad processes are present in the HijackThis log - twice since I tried to run DDS twice).

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below I will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.
  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.
And

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.

Thanks m0le for helping me with this problem.

Since that time, I have followed the malware removal guide from bleepingcomputer.com about Internet Security 2010 - it can be found at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-remo...t-security-2010

I also had some help from another member who was having a similar problem.

So, here's the status so far -
  • I have access to my TaskManager and Regedit
  • I have ran several antispyware tools - MalwareBytes Anti-Malware (several times - was primarily tool from the guide that I followed), SUPERAntiSpyware, Lavasoft Ad-aware, a-squared Free
  • While MBAM gave me an all-clear, some of the other tools kept finding things (and not the ad-cookies), a-squared Free found a couple of exe files with weird names in c:\WINDOWS\Temp etc. I have chosen to clear everything that seems reasonable. I am therefore not convinced at all that I've managed to clean my computer completely of all the horrible stuff.
  • I still haven't connected to the Internet - except for very short bursts to download updates to the antispyware programs. I am using work laptop to download items and transferring it to the computer which is running disconnected via usb key.
  • My Safe Mode is still hosed - it gives me a BSOD. This is another reason why I think that my computer is only partially clean.
  • RootRepeal ( a program that I came to know of on reading bleepingcomputer) never was able to run on my pc. Not even after the partial clean.
  • I tried using GMER last week but it would always crash during the scan.
  • Also, I am getting occasional screen blinks - where the entire desktop refreshes. It makes it seem to me as if some program is getting started.
  • Finally, I see several svchost processes in TaskManager. I don't think I would see so many of those - and why would they be there when I am disconnected from the network?
I tried to end as many programs as I could from the system tray (including anti-spyware protection that I installed above) and am adding below the two files obtained from using OTL per your instructions. Then I uninstalled McAfee from my computer (one of the McAfee programs refuses to uninstall) and I again tried GMER - it still crashed providing the Microsoft dialog to send information to them - I chose "Don't send".

Rogue security programs are getting more aggressive lately.

Let's try and remove the malware

Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
Post the contents of exehelperlog.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com, and should open at the end of the scan)
Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

Then

Download and Run RKill

Please download RKill by Grinler from one of the 4 links below and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
Link 4
  • Before we begin, you should disable your anti-malware softwares you have installed so they do not interfere RKill running as some anti-malware softwares detect RKill as malicious. Please refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Double-click on Rkill on your desktop to run it. (If you are using Windows Vista, please right-click on it and select Run As Administrator)
  • A black screen will appear and then disappear. Please do not worry, that is normal. This means that the tool has been successfully executed.
  • If nothing happens or if the tool does not run, please let me know in your next reply

Finally attempt to run Combofix

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop making sure you rename it comfix.exe
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on Combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Let's see how those steps go. :(

Thanks for the quick reply.

I downloaded all 3 apps to a usb key and transferred it to the PC. Started with a clean reboot and tried to close as many antispyware programs from the System tray.

First ran exehelper. It created a log file. The window didn't say error deleting file but did have some more things than are present in the log. Please let me know if you want me to run it again.

I downloaded rkill again (rkill.pif) and ran this. The display blinked this time - I didn't see a command prompt window at all and nothing else was visible. So don't know if running rkill worked or not.

Then I downloaded combofix and ran it from the desktop as ComFix.exe. I had already previously used ComboFix (a couple of years back) to get a Windows Recovery Console. It didn't ask me about that again. However during the AutoScan, it reported that it detected possible rootkit activity and that the computer should be rebooted. I clicked ok and allowed ComboFix to reboot the computer. After rebooting, combofix restarted when I logged in as admin again. Autoscan completed all 50 stages (including extra stages 6A, 19B and 32A). It then deleted a few files and folders and then again rebooted the machine.

Here's the exehelper log

One more rootkit to remove

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
c:\windows\system32\ndisdrv.sys

Driver::
ndisdrv

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

This should clear the main problem :(

That's looking good now.

We need to run a couple more tools. One removes your temp files, cookies and cache and the other will scan for other infected files.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

If you are using Firefox and this has caused page loading problems then please clear your private data. To do this go
to the Tools menu, select Clear Private Data, and then check Cache. Click Clear Private Data Now.

This could also be Clear Recent History or similar

Then close Firefox and then reopen it.

Then the online scan

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image
Thanks :(

Thanks - Ran ATF-Cleaner --> it doesn't produce any logs.

Then ran ESET Online Scan --> Connected to the internet long enough to download it and then disconnected it while it ran for a good 3 hours. It said that it found 3 items and "quarantined" them.

ESET log
================
C:\Documents and Settings\User1\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop.htt Win32/TrojanDownloader.FakeAlert.AED virus deleted - quarantined
C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop.htt Win32/TrojanDownloader.FakeAlert.AED virus deleted - quarantined
C:\QooBox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\atapi.sys.vir Win32/Olmarik.RF virus deleted - quarantined

================

While the scan was running, initially I left the computer wired. After the download, there were some Network packets that got sent (bursts of 10 packets or so) (By clicking Network Connections --> Status) but I don't know whether they were standard keep-alive sort of things or anything malicious.

Thanks again, m0le for all the help. Hopefully we are winning! :(

Yes, it looks like we're winning. :( I wouldn't worry about the packet being sent.

ESET found the downloader - that's the core of the malware - and killed it so your PC should be clean now. How is it running overall?

I would like to run a further online scan though. This requires you to use Internet Explorer:

Please run a BitDefender Online Scan
  • Click I Agree to agree to the EULA.
  • Allow the ActiveX control to install when prompted.
  • Click Click here to scan to begin the scan.
  • Please refrain from using the computer until the scan is finished. This might take a while to run, but it is important that nothing else is running while you scan.
  • When the scan is finished, click on Click here to export the scan results.
  • Save the report to your desktop so you can post it in your next reply.
If that's clean then we're at the final stages. :(

Hi m0le

Sorry for the delay in responding.

I ended up running the bitdefender scan twice. The first time, it did find a few things & fix it but while doing something else I knocked the extension cord lose and my computer reset. And I had not saved the scan.

So I ended up running bitdefender again and this time it didn't find any problems. While it was running I had turned on "show files" and therefore towards the bottom of the log, you see some media files displayed.

No infected files found.

That's okay and BitDefender is clean so we are done here, Vinh2 :(

You're clean. Good stuff! :(

Let's do some clearing up

Uninstall ComboFix

Remove Combofix now that we're done with it.
  • Please press the Windows Key and R on your keyboard. This will bring up the Run... command.
(For Vista/Windows 7 please click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Run)
  • Now type in Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. (Notice the space between "Combofix" and "/")
  • Please follow the prompts to uninstall Combofix.
  • You will then receive a message saying Combofix was uninstalled successfully once it's done uninstalling itself.
This will uninstall Combofix and anything associated with it.

Download and Run OTC

We will now remove the tools we used during this fix using OTC.
  • Download OTC by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click Posted Image icon to start the program. If you are using Vista, please right-click and choose run as administrator
  • Then Click the big Posted Image button.
  • You will get a prompt saying "Being Cleanup Process". Please select Yes.
  • Restart your computer when prompted.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's some advice on how you can keep your PC clean

Update your AntiVirus Software

It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. If you use a commercial antivirus program you must make sure you keep renewing your subscription. Otherwise, once your subscription runs out, you may not be able to update the programs virus definitions.

Make sure your applications have all of their updates

It is also possible for other programs on your computer to have security vulnerability that can allow malware to infect you. Therefore, it is also a good idea to check for the latest versions of commonly installed applications that are regularly patched to fix vulnerabilities. You can check these by visiting Secunia Software Inspector and Calendar of Updates.

Install an AntiSpyware Program

A highly recommended AntiSpyware program is SuperAntiSpyware. You can download the free Home Version. or the Pro version for a 15 day trial period.

Installing this or another recommended program will provide spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should scan your computer with an AntiSpyware program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

Finally, here's a treasure trove of antivirus, antimalware and antispyware resources

That's it Vinh2, happy surfing!

Cheers.

Hi m0le

Thanks for all the help. :(

I checked and am now able to boot into Safe Mode. So I was happy that whatever was preventing that had been fixed.

However, then I decided to run RootRepeal - it had never managed to run on my machine and it still did not run - it hangs at an "Initializing application" graphic box.

I then tried GMER (randomly named executable) and as before - it caused my computer to reboot without finishing the scan. (The scan runs finding things but then somewhere in the middle of the scan the computer resets itself). So, I'm concerned that there might still be something that is interfering with the machine operation. :(

Do you by any chance know of any problems where both Root Repeal and GMER may not work and it is not due to any malware activity on the system?

Is there any other test that I should run?

Gmer and RootRepeal can crash if malware is present but they also can crash for other reasons. Let's try this scanner to check this. In this case, I think the PC is clean so the Sophos log should be clean.

Please download Sophos Anti-rootkit & save it to your desktop.
alternate download link
Note: If using the vendor's download site you will be asked to register with MySophos so an email containing an activation link can be sent to your email address.

Be sure to print out and read the Sophos Anti-Rookit User Manual and Release Notes.
  • Double-click sar_15_sfx.exe to begin the installation, read the license agreement and click Accept.
  • Allow the default location of C:\Program Files\Sophos\Sophos Anti-Rootkit and click Install.
  • A message will appear "Sophos Anti-Rootkit was successfully installed. Click 'yes' to start it now".
  • Click Yes and allow the driver and its randomly named .tmp file (i.e. F.tmp) to load if asked.
  • If the scan did not start automatically, make sure the following are checked:
    • Running processes
    • Windows Registry
    • Local Hard Drives
  • Click Start scan.
  • Sophos Anti-Rootkit will scan the selected areas and display any suspicious files in the upper panel.
  • When the scan is complete, a pop-up screen will appear with "Rootkit Scan Results". Click OK to continue.
  • Click on the suspicious file to display more information about it in the lower panel which also includes whether the item is recommended for removal.
    • Files tagged as Removable: No are not marked for removal and cannot be removed.
    • Files tagged as Removable: Yes (clean up recommended) are marked for removal by default.
    • Files tagged as Removable: Yes (but clean up not recommended) are not marked for removal because Sophos did not recognize them. These files will require further investigation.
  • Select only items recommended for removal, then click "Clean up checked items". You will be asked to confirm, click Yes.
  • A pop up window will appear advising the cleanup will finish when you restart your computer. Click Restart Now.
  • After reboot, a dialog box displays the files you selected for removal and the action taken.
  • Click Empty list and then click Continue to re-scan your computer a second time to ensure everything was cleaned.
  • When done, go to Start > Run and type or copy/paste: %temp%\sarscan.log
  • This should open the log from the rootkit scan. Please post this log in your next reply. If you have a problem, you can find sarscan.log in C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\.
Before performing an ARK scan it is recommended to do the following to ensure more accurate results and avoid common issues that may cause false detections.
  • Disconnect from the Internet or physically unplug you Internet cable connection.
  • Clean out your temporary files.
  • Close all open programs, scheduling/updating tasks and background processes that might activate during the scan including the screensaver.
  • Temporarily disable your anti-virus and real-time anti-spyware protection.
  • After starting the scan, do not use the computer until the scan has completed.
  • When finished, re-enable your anti-virus/anti-malware (or reboot) and then you can reconnect to the Internet.
Thanks (and you are welcome for the help) :(

Hi m0le

Thanks for investigating this some more...

The results from the Sophos scan were a little mystifying to me.

It detected 3 items. Snapshot is below. I am logged in as admin so I don't see why it can't access the hive.

==================
Warning: Failed to query live registry key \HKEY_USERS. You may not have access rights to the whole registry.

Incorrect function.

==================

It said none of them is "removable".

What would be the next step at this point?
