I recently was hit with Antivirus Live. The second scareware attack in a month. I used the rkill and MBAM to clean out the Antivirus Live and it seemed to work well. However, there is now something quite WRONG with explorer. It will not connect to the internet. I know there is connection because MSN works fine and all connections are connected the way they should be.

On opening Explorer it reads "internet explorer cannot display the webpage". So, I "diagnose" the connection problem and where is what happens:

Windows cannot connect to the internet using HTTP, HTTPS, or FTP. This is probably caused by firewall settings on this computer. Check the firewall settings for the HTTP port (80), HTTPS port 443 and FTP port 21.

You might need to contact your ISP provider, or the manufacture of your firewall software.

I have checked all of the settings, uninstalled, reinstalled, whined at techie friends and all to no avail. Does anyone have ANY idea how I can get back to surfing??
Much thanks!!

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results, click no to the Optional_Scan
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet. You can find information on A/V control HERE

Orange,
Another tech had advised that he'd moved my posted to the HJT logs and forum. That was 10 days ago, I've heard nothing since. Getting a little concerned, and no, have not resolved the problem.
Awaiting the wisdom of the Elders on this one!!
Thanks
T.

Hi therealtabby,

Welcome to BC HijackThis forum. I am going to assist you with your problem.

Please refrain from making any changes to your system (scanning or running other tools, updating Windows, installing applications, removing files, etc.) from now on as it might interfere with our fixes. Please let me know in your next reply if you agree with this.

Could you tell me how far is the distance between the working and the problem computer? And if you have a flash drive to transfer things from the working to the problem computer?

There's only a few feet between the computers (4 or 5). A flash drive? No, but I'm thinking I could find one real quick. :( I have run nothing else on the problem computer. I tried to burn dds to CD (failure there), so right now it's running in safe mode with a big note on it to not be touched. :(

Please these steps we don't need a flash drive. But can't you use MSN to transfer the logs if needed.
  • Go to Start => Run, type cmd and click Enter.
Type the following in the command window and press Enter:

    proxycfg -d

(There is space between proxycfg and -d)

  • Disable AVG LinkScanner:
    • Double click AVG system tray icon to open AVG.
    • In Overview section double click LinkScanner.
    • Uncheck the options to disable Linkscanner.
    • Press Save Changes.
  • Now we need to uninstall a few programs. You may install them again when we are done. Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the following programs:

    Spybot - Search & Destroy
    LimeWire

    Also uninstall DAEMON Tools Lite

  • Please open HiJackThis and choose do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below (if present):

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:5555
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - *{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
    O16 - DPF: {6A060448-60F9-11D5-A6CD-0002B31F7455} (ExentInf Class) -
    O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} (PopCapLoader Object) - http://clubgames.pogo.com/online2/pogop/zu...aploader_v5.cab

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, including browsers, so that nothing other than HijackThis is open, then click Fix Checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Double-click Internet Options.
    • Under Advanced tab press Restore advanced settings
    • Under General tab. Press Delete.... Make sure all the options are checked and select Delete.
    • Under Programs select Mange add-ons.
    • Select Toolbars and Extensions.
    • Find AVG LinkScanner and select it. Click Disable and Close.
    • Also check and if needed reset the Privacy and Security Options to default:
      • Under privacy tab press default.
      • Under security tab press default.
  • Now reboot the computer to normal mode and tell me how Internet Explorer is behaving. In case it is still not working go to Safe Mode with Networking and see if it is working there.

Farbar -
I'm terribly sorry - I have a funky schedule here and sometimes it can take DAYS before I can get to something. I've been through the instructions above, and things seemed to sort out fine. Shall I run HJT again and post another log?

It seems a touch slow on clicks and a mite glichy, but I'm not sure if my mouse is wearing out or it's a side effect of the cleaning.
When you have a moment.

No worries about the delay and great news. :(

I didn't ask to run any scan or to post any logs as we were hampered due to lack of internet connection and the fact that you didn't have a flash drive ready.

We need to take a deeper look at the system to make sure it is clean.
  • Disable AVG Resident Shield:
    • Double click AVG system tray icon to open AVG.
    • In Overview section double click Resident Shield.
    • Uncheck Resident Shield Active.
    • Press Save Changes.

Note: It is important to activate the resident shield immediately after ComboFix produced its log.
  • Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3

    * IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

    • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Information on A/V control HERE)
    • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
    • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
    • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

    Posted Image

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

    Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please copy and paste the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

I suspect the kids have been fooling around with this computer when I'm not home (they're not supposed to), so hopefully they havent changed anything.

I don't know if the kids have used LimeWhire or not but:
Your log(s) show that you are using so called peer-to-peer or file-sharing programs. These programs allow to share files between users as the name(s) suggest. In today's world the cyber crime has come to an enormous dimension and any means is used to infect personal computers to make use of their stored data or machine power for further propagation of the malware files. A popular means is the use of file-sharing tools as a tremendous amount of prospective victims can be reached through it.

It is therefore possible to be infected by downloading manipulated files via peer-to-peer tools and thus suggested to be used with intense care. Some further readings on this subject, along the included links, are as follows: "File-Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer" and "Risks of File-Sharing Technology."

Apart from that everything looks good. :(

Go to Start => Run => copy and paste next command in the field then hit enter:

ComboFix /Uninstall

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

It makes a clean Restore Point and clears all the old restore points in order to prevent possible reinfection from an old one through system restore.

Happy Surfing therealtabby. :(
