You should be able to exit the program without any bad consequences.

ty john,

i did & alls fine. ty. i did the spybot & adaware thing and dont want to post to hjt forum till some one (you maybe?) refers me to that forum.
i have a log ready to post.

the avfree program sez there are many corrupted & infected files that cant be repaired or deleted.

about every other task performed on the pc prompts a window ( i think legit )
saying that the program has performed an illegal operation and must close. hard to get anything done.

the friend i'm helping is on dailup using a pc with, maybe, the speed of a snail. he also is on "life line" and cant tie up the phone for very long. so... on line scans cannot be done. he has cd drive and i have a burner and dsl. so i dl whats needed an walk it over to his pc and upload.

he still has mallware popping up and advising him that his pc is infected and prompts to go to an address where the pc can be cleaned (buy what bridge where?). there is a "wareout" program listed in add/remove.

we finnally got back online by removing and reinstalling the isp.
i'm not familiar with navagating in '98.

advice sir?

ty

Try running the following from safe mode (Getting to safe-mode) Sysclean you'll also need the virus template file from here lpt***.zip

or

DrWeb CureIT

Also try installing and running A2 Free and Ewido

I'd also run Spybot and Adaware in safe mode.

If you have XP I'd consider building the UBCD4Win you can add the Spybot plugin which will search the off-line registry of the PC you need to scan. You will need however WinXP with SP1 or SP2 integrated into the source CD.

There's also Trend Micros spyware remover but if your friend only has dialup run the program on your dsl connection and copy the folder here C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\ and place this folder on your friends PC when you run the program.

If you can, run Ad-AwareSE "Safe Mode;" this may prevent the application from hanging up mid-process. I assume you have also run his resident Anti-virus; if not, do this in safe mode as well.
Make a note of anything that cannot be quarantined for further instructions. Once you have done everything you can, then I would suggest submitting a HJT log, following the instructions below:

John sir,
Thank you for your assistance and time. Will run all resident “anti-bad stuff” programs in safe mode and post an up to date log per your suggestion.

Ty again sir, and with that I will vacate this thread.

Ty stidyup for your input

EDIT: John sir,
i think maybe i jumped the gun? i posted a hjt log http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...topic=28278&hl=
did you want me to advise you of anything that can't be quarantined by the av program before going to hjt forum?
