Can you search of Disk C: for comctl32.dll? Use Search Companion not Desktop Search.

In the search window go to View, select details and Choose details, scrolll down and select version, then click ok.

You should see on 1 instance of comctl32.dll in C:\WINDOWS\system32.

Version: 6.0.2900.5512 for XP SP3

It might. I was trying to check Microsoft DLL Help Database, but it only covers XP Pro up to SP2

I am trying to change the version on my virtual machine as a test before we break yours beyond repair.

I have changed mine to 6.0.2900.5512 with no problem but I would like to change it to 5.0.2900.5512, your version and replicate the error.

It could be a third party software that has replaced comctl32.dll. Have your ever done a How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state?

It could be a third party software that has replaced comctl32.dll.

I use True Transparency to give the aero theme effect in XP.
Does that modify the explorer files.

Found reference to Spyware/Malware causing exact same problem.
You might want to look at posting your problem here; http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/103/am-i-infected-what-do-i-do/

thanks hamluis.
today the problem had vanished again !
My computer manufacturer: Hewlett - Packard
Model : HP Pavilion t820i
The only thing i remember doing before the above occurrences was that I cleaned registry using Tuneup Registry Cleaner !
I ran sfc /scannow and after it scanned it didn't ask me to insert the Windows Xp Installation CD !
