Hi my brother had been given an HP xt 965. When it starts up it goes thru the sequence fine then reads hello xxxxx and hangs, if you click on the name it asks to register the somewhere. On my XP home edition i can use f1 or f2 fine on mine, his it did not work. on his screen there is no place to log in or out etc just the name and to shut the machine down witch works fine. How do we get passed this screen.

My guess would be that the userinit file is damaged, needs to be replaced.

See suggestions by Garmanma at New Userinit File - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/240289/windows-keeps-restarting-by-itself/.

A repair install of XP should do, as an alternative.
