I have a Toshiba Satellite running Vista. I just sent an email to a friend and noticed it sent out emails to everyone in my address book, most came back failure but some made it across. I can type in the link that it sent them, but do not want to cause anyone here any harm. It looks to just be spam. My computer has been running slow the last week, so I ran a complete scan with no errors through AVG.

What should I do?

Thanks In Advance,
Beth

hi,,,, notify your friends not to open any emails from that mail account as the spammers have it now and dont use it again. if your worried about infections then open a thread in the "am i infected" forum in security section and help will be given from the security experts,,,, in the mean time download this malware scanner,,, download the free version,,, (blue tab) update and full scan.

What do spammers actually do to an account and how did this happen? Anyway, my friends should never use their email addresses again?

I ran Malwarebytes, no problems found.

So should it all be good, do spammers have my email address too?

Thanks.

hi,,, the spammers have your email account now, so dont use it or spam will be sent to every one,,,, and if your friends open one then the spam bot will sent spam to all there contacts as well,,,,,,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E-mail_spam
http://technology.solveyourproblem.com/sto...s_of_spam.shtml
spam was just a pain in the arse, but now its something much more sinister unfortunately,,,, here are 3 real dangers of spam these days,,,,

1. Rise in hijacked and spoofed email addresses means that
someone can make it look like their spamming campaign is
coming from your computer. The impact is that you could have
your internet connection terminated or put on hold by your
ISP - all without your knowledge. This raises the issue that
spam needs to be blocked, ideally, in both directions - to
ensure you are not an unwilling accomplice to a malicious
spam campaign

2. Convergence of viruses and spam. You are no doubt aware of
the nasty rise in viruses that end up impacting your PC in a
number of harmful ways including slowing you system down,
crashing your system, logging your keystrokes, stealing private
information, redirecting you to porn sites, etc... Now, in the
past the incidence of a virus travelling through email would be
fairly predictable. That has changed with viruses working
together with spam. An example is the SoBig virus whos purpose
was to create a broad spamming infrastructure by planting code
on unwilling participants PCs creating a mass threat to email
security. This is just the tip of the iceburg, spam will
increasingly be used to spread and activate very dangerous
viruses - for this reason alone, you need to be looking at
spam blocker software.

3. Mix of spam and phishing. If you haven't heard of phishing
before, it refers to the misleading emails you get dressing
themselves up to look like legitimate emails to get confidential,
often financial, information from you. Some common examples are
the Paypal or Bank emails that claim you need to login with your
private information to verify contact information or update
account information. In reality, this is a malicious third party
that steals your private information and can cause you MAJOR
identity and financial problems.

hope this helps a little

hi,,, me again
while were on about spam, here are a couple of things you can do,,,
you need to get good spam blockers that work both ways,,, in and out,,,
i also like to use internet based email clients like say,,, gmail, livemail,, yahoo mail and many more,,
this is because all mail is held on their servers and not your pc, so if you have infected emails and do not open them you are safe,,, also in the event of your mail addy being corrupt, you can just dump it and open another,,, i always forward important mail that i need to save to other mail accounts just encase i have to stop using that address,,,,,
never give out your isp email address to anyone, friends included, always give them an internet mail account,,, never give out account details in an email,,, never click on links in an email,,, copy and paste them into your browser,,, never open emails you dont know the senders address,,, never type your email address while online say on face book etc, as spam bots will pick up on the @ sign in the address and your mail address will be corrupt,, if you have an email in ALL your mail accounts from the same friend and all received around the same time then its probably spam, as there mail address book is being spammed and it sends an automated mail to all addresses at the same time,,, if a friend was mailing you why would they send it to all your email addresses ????
sorry if this is sounding a bit doom and gloom, but just common seance and good practise will help in most cases,,, :flowers:
any info you need just google for it or ask on this site and the members will be glad to help.
good luck.
then we get onto security,,,, most good security programs check incoming and outgoing mail,,, i use avast home free and this does this very well. check yours has this facility

Wow, you have my head spinning. I appreciate your knowledge and your help. Thank you!!!! Truly, thank you. I know enough about computers to be functional but do not know how to handle the defiant people!

Ok, I sent everyone an email to not open the "no subject" email that I sent out earlier.

I ran my virus scan from AVG, ran malwarebytes and spybot. Only Spybot showed a couple of minor adwares. So, do I have to get rid of my yahoo email, I have had that email for over 8 years, and everyone knows it in my home. If I do get rid of it, how do I put my email addresses into the new yahoo email? Or should I ask yahoo for help with that? Also, I just dumped 1000 spams for my spam folder, why is this different, because it took control over my addresses? This is not a good Christmas present.

You CAN definitely continue using your email account.....change the password and clean your computer of its infection first.

And regarding the the information provided by figgis41 "never type your email address while online say on face book etc, as spam bots will pick up on the @ sign in the address and your mail address will be corrupt", that is complete BS. Safe, trusted sites are perfectly fine to type your email address on. That's how you register for the majority of sites. Therefore that comment is completely false when talking about legitimate sites such as facebook.

I will be helping with cleaning your system.

If you have already run MBAM and the log has come back clean, please run the following scan.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune & save it to your desktop. alternate download link DO NOT use yet.
Please download and install SUPERAntiSpyware Free
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and unzip into the program's folder.)
  • Under the "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences... button.
  • Click the "General and Startup" tab, and under Start-up Options, make sure "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts" box is unchecked.
  • Click the "Scanning Control" tab, and under Scanner Options, make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program.
  • Do not run a scan just yet.
Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • If you use Firefox browser click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • If you use Opera browser click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Note: On Vista, "Windows Temp" is disabled. To empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator".

Scan with SUPERAntiSpyware as follows:
  • Launch the program and back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan and click "Next".
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.

hi xblindx,,, i agree with the bit about safe trusted sites are usually fine to type in email addys, weather F/B is safe is another matter  as we know most social networking sites are vulnerable
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...p;#entry1357843
its had its moments and i was just Generalising (wrongly by me) but you get my point,,, its like someone using there email addy on here, a good safe site but i still see admins removing them and asking people not to do it,,,, you can never be to sure,,, if im passing over an email addy to some one online i always put "at" to represent the @, mite be a bit paranoid of me but i would not like to have an email addy hijacked by a spam bot,,,,,
i like the look of ATF cleaner btw,, i think i'll add it to my collection of tools :flowers:
Happy Christmas.

Hi, Merry Christmas to you both
And Figgis, I might have been a bit harsh with my comment so I apologize, I just had the impression that you meant to never use your email address online o.O lol. And regarding that link about my topic, I honestly believe I was hacked because over the summer I was in Iran (my dad's from there) and all of my passwords were changed to "infidel", seems a bit fishy to me lol.

As for your email account, whenever I have declared your machine clean, you can safely change the password to the account and continue using it. Be sure to set a strong password (long, using both letters and numbers, and special characters such as "!" or "?" if possible)

You can safely keep SuperAntispyware, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, ATF Cleaner, and SpyBot (with TeaTimer disabled) on your computer.

I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time. The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:
1) False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
2) System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Therefore please go to add/remove in the control panel and remove either AVG or Avast.

Some types of malware will disable MBAM and other security tools. If MBAM will not install, try renaming it.

  • Before saving any of your security programs, rename them first. For example, before you save Malwarebytes', rename it to something like MBblah.exe and then click on Save and save it to your desktop. Same thing after you install it. Before running it, rename the main executable file first

Right-click on the mbam-setup.exe file and change the .exe extension to .bat, .com, .pif, or .scr and then double-click on it to run.

If after installation, MBAM will not run, open the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder in Program Files, right-click on mbam.exe and change the .exe as noted above. Then double-click on it to run..
  • Another work around is by not using the mouse to install it, Just use the arrow keys, tab, and enter keys.

~ Courtesy of boopme

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here or here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.
For a complete visual tutorial of MBAM, see http://thespykiller.co.uk/index.php/topic,5946.0.html

Please include the following in your reply:

Hi, Merry Christmas to you to XBlindX,,,, no need to apologize  just a little misunderstanding,,, i read your post and like you came to the conclusion that there was probably some sort of key logger on the pc you used in Iran,,, which is a shame, but on the plus side your an experienced pc user and were more than upto the challenge :flowers:
just on a note of the op's sas log,,, i googled this CPNPRT2.CID its from Coupons.com. and it seems to me its a bit of a pain to get rid off apparently,,,,
im very interested in how you cleanse the op's pc so i hope you dont mind me looking in in this thread,,,,,
i also use mbam full and sas full on 6 of my home pc's,,, 3 on each and find them very good indeed,,,
Happy Holidays to you both :trumpet:

Yeah when I was over in Iran, it was during all the protests and stuff, so the internet was on lockdown haha. Had to use a proxy just to access facebook and myspace >_>

And generally, adware (such as what was detected with SAS) isn't as hard to remove as other forms of malware such as trojans, rogue programs, etc. Also, the adware was detected in a temporary folder. If MBAM doesn't snag any remnants, another temporary file cleaner I have on hand should.
The fact that the OP noticed her computer sending random emails is what bothers me. Hopefully we can clear this up quite easily though

I had ran MalwareBytes right off the bat with no errors. I ran it again just now, same thing. I am a coupon Mom so I do go to tons of coupons sites. Also, when the email went out, I was replying to a friend's email. Could it have possibly been a virus bouncing off of her??? Thanks for the help and knowledge!
