I am trying to help a friend fix their computer remotely (via LogMeIn). They were reporting the following problems:
- On using Internet Explorer 6, they would sometimes get additional IE windows opening (with sites such as thewebsitesurvey.com)
- On using Internet Explorer 6, they would click on search engine results (usually either in Yahoo! search engine results or Google search engine results) and would be redirected to a totally different page - it appears as if something was hijacking the search engine results redirect

I first installed Mozilla Firefox on their computer, and noticed that both of the above problems were occuring using Firefox as well.

Here is the URL of one of the pop-ups that opened up randomly (via Firefox): hxxp://www.getyourfreegiftcard.net/?keyword=http%3A%2F%2Fgoogleads.g.doubleclick.net%2Fpagead%2Fads%3Fclient%3Dca-pub-0920899300397823%26format%3D728x90_as%26output%3Dhtml%26h%3D90%26w%3D728%26channel%3D8147374791%26ad_type%3Dtext_image%26ea%3D0%26color_bg%3Dffffff%26color_border%3Dffffff%26color_link%3D003060%26color_text%3D000000%26color_url%3D000000%26flash%3D10.0.42%26url%3Dhttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.bleepingcomputer.com%2F%26dt%3D1261534459829%26correlator%3D1261534459832%26frm%3D1%26ga_vid%3D1597529658.1261534462%26ga_sid%3D1261534462%26ga_hid%3D883235471%26ga_fc%3D0%26u_tz%3D-300%26u_his%3D2%26u_java%3D1%26u_h%3D768%26u_w%3D1024%26u_ah%3D734%26u_aw%3D1024%26u_cd%3D32%26u_nplug%3D24%26u_nmime%3D1

Here is the URL of one of the webpages that appears when you click on a search engine result and are hijacked/redirected:
First this page opens quickly: hxxp://geocahing.com/search.php
Then this page: hxxp://www.questbooster.com/6886/search.php?keyword=est&sid=f21ba86e24bf8db594e677381cdb90b3&cid=BPO

I tried all the common anti-virus/anti-spyware/anti-malware applications:
- Uninstalled an expired Norton AntiVirus 2005 and installed and updated Avira AntiVir
- installed spybot, updated spybot, and then immunized and ran full scan
- installed malwarebytes' anti-malware and updated and ran full scan
- tried running HijackThis
- ran CCleaner

I ran spybot, avira, and malwarebytes' anti-malware several times until all reported clean systems. However, the problem still persists. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
  • Please download OTL from following mirror:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized
In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

Hi,

I am suspecting at least one rootkit on the machine. If this is the case, your friend may have to do a couple of steps offline. There are a couple of steps we can try before, but is there a possibility of walking him through over the phone?

To check if the rootkit is present please run gmer:
Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.

What did malwarebytes find? Could you provide the logs?

Hi myrti,

Unfortunately, it appears as if I can't remote into my friend's computer any longer. I'm wondering if whatever infections he has on his system are causing this. I was able to, and then it started acting strangely and eventually the connection broke altogether. Then I had him reboot it and the same thing happened - it let me in for a few minutes, then started acting strangely and kicked me a few times, and now it shows as having been offline for the past day or so.

As a result, I'm going to probably physically pick up the computer tomorrow and bring it to my location to work on. Would it be OK to wait until I get it back here and set up (probably tomorrow or Sunday) and then we can continue?

Thanks!

I am now in physical possession of the computer.

I tried to run GMER first and it took a very long time, and then when I came back to the computer it had rebooted. I ran it again and it once more took a very long time, but it finished without rebooting. It was then very problematic to save the log file, as the program kept freezing and the computer did as well. I was just about to reboot again and try in safe mode when it finally let me save the log file.

Here it is:

Hi,

you have been infected by a nasty rootkit. This is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you decide to clean, please run Combofix and post the logs here:

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

If you need help, see this link:

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

While running ComboFix, I received this message: ComboFix has detected the presence of rootkit activity and needs to reboot the machine

ComboFix then rebooted my machine, but before I was able to get back into the OS to once again re-disable Avira AntiVir, ComboFix started running (before the shell fully loaded so I had no access to disable Avira AntiVir) and as a result, I did receive several pop-ups with warnings from Avira AntiVir while ComboFix was running.

Here is the log:

Hi,

ComboFix seems to have taken care of the rootkit. :( Could you please check that you are no longer getting redirected?

Please also run a scan with mbr to confirm:
  • Go to Start > Run and type: cmd.exe
  • press Ok.
  • At the command prompt type: mbr.exe -t >"C:\mbr.log"
  • press Enter.
  • A "DOS" box will open and quickly disappear. That is normal.
  • A log file named mbr.log will be created and saved to the root of the system drive (usually C:\).
  • Copy and paste the results of the mbr.log in your next reply.
