Hello sharkman14 and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

Before we run HijackThis we need to take care of a trojan named Peper which has infected your system. Please follow these steps to download and run a special repair tool:
  • Please Download PeperFix.exe.
  • Reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item
    • Press Enter.
  • Start the tool and click Find and Fix.
  • Reboot to finish removing what it found (again, boot to Safe Mode).
  • Run the tool a second time.
  • Reboot to finish removing the entries.
Step #2

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #3

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: VideoCCodec module - {58DBCE03-FFC3-4452-AB1D-C19EE9825A50} - C:\WINDOWS\VIDEOC.DLL
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [48#5#895974A7G] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Xszv.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [intell32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\intell32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PSGuard] C:\Program Files\PSGuard\PSGuard.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RVP] "C:\Program Files\RVP\bpc.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TVS_B] C:\PROGRAM FILES\TVS\TVS_B.EXE
O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
O16 - DPF: {1D40AC68-9F06-4827-96B2-A8A048B6765B} (InstallerAX Class) - http://chevy.a.content.maven.net/mvms/vfs/...installerAX.cab

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #4

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\VIDEOC.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Xszv.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\intell32.exe
C:\Program Files\PSGuard\ <--folder
C:\Program Files\RVP\ <--folder
C:\PROGRAM FILES\TVS\ <--folder

Step #5

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #6

Reboot normally and run at least 2 of the following on-line virus scans:Bitdefender <<<Add a check by 'Autoclean'.
RAV <<<Add a check by 'Autoclean', leave everything else as is.
eTrust <<<'Cure' whatever is found, then delete if unsuccessful
Housecall <<<Put on 'Autoclean' and delete what it can't clean.
Panda ActiveScan <<<Accept default settings
If there are any files that cannot be automatically disinfected or quarantined then you will need to delete them manually.

Step #7

If you do not already have Ad-Aware SE 1.06 then follow these download and setup instructions: Ad-Aware SE Setup. Otherwise, just check for updates.

Start Ad-aware SE, click the Start button and choose Perform Full System Scan. Click the Next button and wait for the scan to complete. If anything was found, right-click on the list and choose Select All and remove all it finds.

Step #8

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

OT
I do not respond to PM's requesting help. That's what the forums are here for. Please use them so that others may benefit from your questions and the responses you receive.

Thanks for the help, OldTimer.

Before I got your response, I took it upon myself to go to the Microsoft website and update my computer with the necessary critical updates. I also deleted a few old programs from my system.

I followed all the steps, and I ran 3 of the virus scans in step #3 (Bitdefender, RAV and eTrust).

I ran Ad-aware, and I also ran Spybot for good measure (since it was already on my system.

I deleted Earthlink from my system and I noticed that there is an entry in the HijackThis log referencing Earthlink and says "file missing". Is it safe to delete that?

Here is my updated HijackThis log:

Hi sharkman14. That looks better. We have a couple of new items to remove and if earthlink has been removed let's remove those items too.

Step #1

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...rch/search.html
O2 - BHO: PnIEBrowserHelperObj Class - {4B5F2E08-6F39-479a-B547-B2026E4C7EDF} - C:\Program Files\EarthLink TotalAccess\PnEL.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: FlashTEnhancer Ext - {D7E588AB-A5D9-4422-B313-22A3470F9700} - C:\PROGRAM FILES\FTK\FTK.DLL
O3 - Toolbar: Pop-Up Blocker - {D7F30B62-8269-41AF-9539-B2697FA7D77E} - C:\Program Files\EarthLink TotalAccess\PnEL.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [FtkCPY] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\ftkcpy.exe"

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #2

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Step #3

Do a search for the following file and write down the full path to it:xml.dll
Now click Start>Run and type the following into the Open editbox:regsvr32 /u "[full path to file]\XML.dll"
Here's an example: regsvr32 /u "c:\windows\system\xml.dll"

After it is unregistered delete the xml.dll file.

Step #4

Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\PROGRAM FILES\FTK\ <--folder
C:\Program Files\EarthLink TotalAccess\ <--folder
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\flnclean.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\flncpy.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\ftkclean.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\ftkcpy.cfg
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\ftkcpy.exe
c:\windows\Temp\ft30s.exe

Note: If you receive any error messages while trying to delete any of the above files/folders then reboot into Safe Mode and try to delete them again. See the instructions below on how to boot into Safe Mode.
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
If you rebooted into Safe Mode then reboot normally.

Step #5

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into the new document. Save it to your desktop as regfix.reg :

Locate regfix.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer Yes and wait for a message to appear similar to Merged Successfully.

Restart your computer.

Step #6

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #7

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Okay OldTimer, here is what we have:

In step #3, I searched for xml.dll and could not find it on my system (find, files and folders, and I typed xml.dll in the name block and searched my computer). I skipped that step and went to step #4.

In step #7, you told me to run Ad-aware SE 1.06. I have Ad-Aware SE Personal Build 1.01. Is mine different than the version you recommend?

Here is my Hijack This log:

Hi sharkman14. That log looks clean. Good job! How are things running? Any more problems?

i would update AdAware to the latest version. As with most applications, you want to keep the programs updated, especially with programs like virus scanners and spyware hunters. You also want to make sure they always have updated definition files.

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the View menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • In the Hidden files section unselect Show all files.
  • Click OK.
Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You already have a good anti-virus, and you should also have a good firewall for blocking unwanted access to and from your computer. These also are free for personal use:It is best to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit Microsoft Windows Update monthly. Microsoft puts out new updates on the 2nd Tuesday of every month so be sure to check regularly.

And to keep your system clean be aware of what emails you open, what websites you visit, and update and run these free malware scanners once a week:To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!

Thanks for the help OldTimer.

Everything looks like it's operating properly. I already run Spybot and AD Aware weekly, but I will download a couple of the programs you recommended.

I actually have McAfee Firewall, but I've had trouble with it. I'll try and set it up again, but be prepared to see another post from me asking how to set it up

Once again, thanks for the help...hopefully I can return the favor someday. I don't think I'll ever be able to help with computer advice, but if you ever need advice on electrical work or fantasy sports, then I'm your guy :flowers:
