A friend of mine (honest!) relies heavily on her computer but relied on "being careful" to avoid infection and other security problems. Inevitably the PC is now infected. The main problem was Internet Security 2010 which, as you will know, locked out everything (regedit, task manager etc) and gave spurious alerts. Malwarebytes (free version) was installed on the PC but never actually used and when I attempted to use it the process was instantly killed. I got round that by renaming the executable and was able to run a scan which, as would be expected on an undefended PC, found over a hundred items of malware. The free version killed this off and I purchased her a full version with the real time shield.

I've also set up AShampoo free firewall and Avira free antivirus. Running Avria found half a dozen viruses and removed them.

But there is still something on the PC. Malwarebytes full scan finds nothing and neither does Avira. I've also tried SpywareBlaster, SpywareTerminator and Windows defender. They initially all found problems but scans are now clear. The problems still remain.

These are persistent attempts at contacting ip addresses 64.135.77.30, 213.174.149.70 and 212.117.174.177 plus search redirects. Malwarebytes pro version now stops the attempts at ip contacts. All three browsers on the PC (IE7, Firefox and Chrome) have search results redirected in Google and Altavista but not in the Dogpile search pages.

Any help in getting rid of this problem would be very much appreciated.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

My thanks for your reply. I really appreciate it and the work you do here.

After reading some of the replies that state a machine can never be fully trusted again if a backdoor has been installed, I have today decided to format the PC and reinstall from scratch. Everything is now working fine.

I've also upgraded the firewall application to ZoneAlarm and can see that it is stopping connections from a number of suspicious sites that are trying to access the machine. Malwarebytes, full version, and Ad-Aware are also up and running. Hopefully, this will keep the machine clean.

Thanks again.
