Hi Guys,

Sorry to inconvenience you but I may have had a possible browser hijack, but I may have squelched it. I wanted some expert help checking everything is off my system so I'm posting here. So the story goes, I was just on Yahoo, checking through my email, clicking on sites I did know that sent emails to check their products on sale. Suddenly my Adobe Reader flashed on screen, next thing I know, my Zone Alarm caught a Trojan. I immediately severed my internet connection and deleted the Trojan it caught and went back on the internet. When I opened up a browser window, I was opening up a link there, that window opened, but another browser opened with some "news article". I immediately severed my internet connection. I ran my Zone Alarm in Ultra Deep Scan and it came up with nothing. I ran a deep scan with a-squared and it came up with one unusual thing in a System Restore which I deleted. I then ran Super AntiSpyware in Complete Scan and it came up with a few things that I quarantined and deleted and then rebooted. Still paranoid, I decide to see if I could post a Hijack This report somewhere for help or reassurance. Coming here, I saw you wanted to use the procedure with the DDS and RootRepeal so...

DDS report:

Thanks you for any help you can give. It is greatly appreciated by this idiot computer user.

Well, looks like what I have may not be off. I went to check my Fantasy Football and when I went to sign in, a window opened up with "Breaking News Story". Crap.

Merged posts. ~ OB

Title was: Problems worsening, New Logs, Problems on my system worsening ~ OB

Hi Guys,

I apologize for doing this, my old topic hadn't had a chance to be responded to and my system seems to be worsening, it seems to be under attack now. This is my old topic:

Mod. edit: Merged new topic to old topic. ~ OB

I couldn't edit it so I posted this new topic. Again, apologies.

Today, when I turned on my computer today, I updated my Zone Alarm. I was immediately alerted that a Trojan was in my system after it finished. I quarantined and deleted, rebooted and it came up again. This happened about 4 times, every time I rebooted the compute with access to the internet. The Trojan was called by Zone Alarm, Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Genome.abvd, and was constantly being found in C:\WINDOWS\Temp\(some random letters).tmp\svchost.exe. Those various folders would be deleted and then a new random folder would be generated on reboot or after Zone Alarm deleted the folder. When I checked that directory, there over 100 randomly lettered folders in there, apparently being generated every 5 minutes or so.

Before the final reboot, I was able to update all the other programs I have, with no issues, A-squared, Malwarebytes, and Super Antispyware. This last reboot, I turned off my modem, no access to the internet. I ran CCleaner, cleared everything. Than ran the deepest scans with first my Zone Alarm, then A-squared, Malwarebytes, Super Antispyware and other than A-squared having an issue with the Sony Vaio updaters, which I went ahead and let it delete, they found nothing. I then rebooted, this time with access to the internet, and the Trojan was right back, attacking. The longer I stay connected, the more attacks that my system picks up and quarantines.

When a browser window was opened, it didn't show my home page, it showed the contents of my C:drive and the folders.

Also, just noticed, while emptying my recycle bin, it won't let me empty a file. I check it and it says there are 23 items in the Recycle Bin, I see nothing, and my system is set to show me everything. Is this normal?

Attached are new logs for everything. Thanks for any help you can give.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
  • Please download OTL from following mirror:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized
In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

Hi myrti,

Unfortunately, I was too impatient, even though I was waiting, I was going to try and go into safe mode and see if I could offload some of my data. When I turned on my computer, I was massively attacked by the downloader which downloaded a number of Trojans and other nasties, basically a Rootkit had taken over. It destroyed the ability for me to get to Safe Mode. I found out there was a way to get to Safe Mode by way of a function in Super Anti-Spyware, which I had installed. Unfortunately, I had forgotten that this Rootkit Virus had disabled Safe Mode on the registry level, or rather, I thought/hoped that maybe this function would get me in. I guess when activated, it rewrites in the Startup, to automatically try to get into Safe Mode, because no version of attempted Startup, i.e. normal windows, Last Configuration, would get me back into windows, just to the attempted Safe Mode start up screen. Basically caught in an attempted Safe Mode start up loop. After about 25 Safe Mode attempts, my system must have given up and (my system is a Sony Vaio) went straight to Recovery Mode, which I couldn't get out of, no matter what I attempted. So I lost everything on reformat.

Anyway, piece of advise, don't use the Super Anti-Spyware Safe Boot function unless you know your registry still has that activated.

Thank you for trying to help me. I don't really blame anyone else but myself. I think you guys are doing an awesome job and are really noble for trying to help us who don't know much.

Again, thank you, hopefully I won't have to bother you guys again.

Chaw

Hi,

I'm sorry to hear that. :(

The safebootrepair of SuperAntiSpyware may work, however the reboot option from SuperAntiSpyware modifies boot.ini, which will leave you in a reboot loop if safe mode doesn't work. Just for the record, the next time this happens, it is sufficient to modify the boot.ini.

When you have a recovery console or a CD at hand it can be an easy fix. Just moving boot.ini to boot.ini.bak should give you a bootable system once more. When you know the problem the solution is not hard. I'm sorry you had to go to the format before we could help you.

In order to prevent future infections maybe read the following advice:
  • Install and update the following programs regularly:
    • an outbound firewall
A comprehensive tutorial and a list of possible firewalls can be found here.
    • an AntiVirus Software
It is imperative that you update your AntiVirus Software on regular basis. If you do not update your AntiVirus Software then it will not be able to catch the latest threats.
    • an Anti-Spyware program
Malware Byte's Anti Malware is an excellent Anti-Spyware scanner. It's scan times are usually under ten minutes, and has excellent detection and removal rates.
SUPERAntiSpyware is another good scanner with high detection and removal rates.
Both programs are free for non commercial home use but provide a resident and do not nag if you purchase the paid versions.
    • Spyware Blaster
A tutorial for Spywareblaster can be found here. If you wish, the commercial version provides automatic updating.
    • MVPs hosts file
A tutorial for MVPs hosts file can be found here. If you would like automatic updates you might want to take a look at HostMan host file manager. For more information on thehosts file, and what it can do for you, please consult the Tutorial on the Hosts file
  • Keep Windows (and your other Microsoft software) up to date!
I cannot stress how important this is enough. Often holes are found in Internet Explorer or Windows itself that require patching. Sometimes these holeswill allow an attacker unrestricted access to your computer.
Therefore, please, visit the Microsoft Update Website and follow the on screen instructions to setup Microsoft Update. Also follow the instructions to update your system. Please REBOOT and repeat this process until there are no more updates to install!!
  • Keep your other software up to date as well
Software does not need to be made by Microsoft to be insecure. You can use the Secunia Online Software occasionally to help you check for out of date software on yourmachine.
  • Stay up to date!
The MOST IMPORTANT part of any security setup is keeping the software up to date. Malware writers release new variantsevery single day. If your software updates don't keep up, then the malware will always be one step ahead. Not a good thing :).
Some more links you might find of interest:If you do not have any more questions, I will close ths topic.

Hi myrti,

Thanks for the advice. Hopefully I will not run into this again. I'm still not sure how this happened, I was just reading email on Yahoo. It must have been on my system and just waiting for an activation time. You can close this topic, I'm done, for now?

Thanks, Chaw
