I had an internet explorer-google redirect trojan and also some kind of rootkit(s) affecting my machines booting. My McAfee security center nor SpywareBlaster, Malewarebytes Anti-Malware, nor Spyware Terminator could detect or stop them. I used PCTools trial which detected them (I've lost the report along with the names) but it wouldn't clean them. I tried to go to safe mode but that was denied. Finally something infected one of my files, nvatabus.sys. I used Active@ Boot Disk, I believe, and it found nvatabus and renamed it. After that, and the machine wouldn't boot in normal or safe mode. Recovery Console on Windows XP disk most commands would not work. permission denied or access denied messages.
I disconnected the infected hard drive.
I used an old hard drive, made it the boot drive, and put windows xp on it, did all the updates & service packs and loaded avira, malewarebytes, sophos, Prevx, Trend RootKitbuster, Trend Micro HOusecall, Kaspersky free scanner and pobably a couple of other things.
I then hooked up the infected drive as slave drive and tested with as many tools as i could in safe mode.
Most found nothing, some found and fixed a few things, including the renamed nvatabus.sys file and quarantined it.
I found the real nvatabus.sys file in my motherboard drivers CD disk and copied it into my infected hard drive in the correct path.
Rebooted to normal mode and tested the infected drive with tools that would not work in safe mode.
Disconnected the boot drive, made the infected (now hopefully clean drive) the boot drive in the CMOS and it booted up. Appeared normal. Ran several of the tools including my normal tools: McAfee security center nor SpywareBlaster, Malewarebytes Anti-Malware, nor Spyware Terminator. I ran Prevx, Sophos, and Rootkitbuster. All detected nothing.

Not quite satisfied, as my main security tools missed the first time around,I tried Hijack This, and now you folks, just to make sure.
Now when I went through the detailed instructions to make all the reports and tests, the computer hung for ~15 minutes at RootRepeal, froze with messages in its window saying "initializing, please wait..." and in another place "scanning..."
Then a sudden blue screen full of a white lettered message taking up the whole screen. something like "Windows must shut down" and some words like "kernel...impact...error" The machine shut down and rebooted into normal mode and all seems well now, but I'm afraid to do that again. It was almost scarier than my trojan/rootkit problems!
So I hope you can recommend something to deal with the RootRepeal issue. Maybe the other stuff will have
I can give you the other reports, but not that ark.txt

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
  • Please download OTL from following mirror:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized
In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

Thanks Myrti,
After my post on the 20th I checked my McAfee firewall log and it blocked some pings and service.tmp and rasesnet.tmp and rascsnet.tmp. Those were detected and removed by the various tools I tried prior to the 20th. Investigating on the internet it seemed to me I had one of the Trojan downloaders, Troj/Mdrop.

Also since my post on the 20th I've added threatfire to my anti malware lineup and I've run about a half dozen online internet-based antimalware scanners including Panda, Bit Defender, ESET, and F-Secure. Trend Micro House Call was the first I tried but it no longer works which has me a bit concerned. It comes up with a runtime error in the Microsoft Visual C++ Library. The second I tried was Panda and it said it found and deleted trj/CI.A but also said it might've been in system restore. None of the other tools have found anything and I think my computer is clean, but I still haven't used it for online banking or bill paying, being a bit paranoid about these things. I have yet to remove most of the files the online anti-malware tools leave behind.

I ran OTL as you requested and below are the pasted reports, OTL.TXT, first

Hi,

the log looks clean, just to be safe I would like you to try the following to get a rootrepeal log:
Before the scan do the following:
Please start RootRepeal, and, before doing anything else, try changing the "Disk Access Level" in the Settings->Options dialog. Try moving it to the "Special" or "High" level. Also, click on the Files tab, and uncheck "Use lowest level for MBR check". Please let me know if this fixes the problem.

Please also provide a log from gmer:
Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.

regards myrti

gmer was not so easy.
I tried to run several times and it would get somewhere around halfway through and would shut the system down and reboot itself.
Used Safe mode as you suggested if I encountered problems, and that worked, though very slowly. There was a lot less showing up on the "progress window" in safe mode than there was in the earlier self-aborted runs in the normal windows environment.

Here's the gmer.log:

Hi,

the logs look clean as well. I suspect you had the TDL3-rootkit, which is very common right now.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

If you did any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Your PC was very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

From the logs I see, I would think that your PC is clean, however there is no way to be 100% sure.

Just to be safe I would like to do one additional scan, but your system looks clean:
I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image

Myrti,
I ran the ESET Online Scan.
It said it found nothing.
There was no option to list the found threats or export to a file.
When I ran ESET before it found nothing either.

Hi,

everything looks clean to me, there seem not to be any leftovers. That means that we should focus on getting your PC up to date.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)" JRE 6 Update 17.
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u17-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
-- If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
-- If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
-- The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Your Adobe Reader is also out of date. Please uninstall it and download the latest version from Adobe: Download
Please untick all proposed toolbars unless you really want them.

please let me know if you run into any trouble,

regards myrti

Myrti,
I removed old Java and installed the new, although the file name on their web site was slightly different than in your instructions.
The download showed the off line installation file as "jre-6ui17-windows-i586.exe" there was no "-p" in the name.

Also, I removed the old Adobe reader 9.1 and installed the "new" Adobe reader 9.2 as you instructed.

I'm curious, because Trend Micro Housecall gave me Microsoft visual C++ errors, should that
be updated too or is there no security vulnerability with that?

Thanks.

Hi,
can you try to remove HouseCall and download and run a clean copy of the program. Does the error still occur? If so I will need the exact error message to see what is going on.
I don't think the error is caused by malware, it could simply be a software issue.

Myrti,
I removed Housecall and re-downloaded the Housecall Launcher to Desktop.
Ran Housecall Launcher and it downloads components updates.
Accepted Terms of Use
Clicked on Scan Now
Immediately got a box titled:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Runtime Error!
Program C:\Docume~1\Ted\Locals~1\Temp\Housecall\housecall.bin

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the aplication's support team.

I Clicked on OK button and it closed the window and sent error report to Microsoft.

Hi,

ok, maybe try the following:

Please download TFC by Old Timer and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!
  • Double-click on TFC.exe to run it. If you are using Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.
  • Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately. If not prompted, manually reboot the machine anyway to ensure a complete clean.
TFC (Temp File Cleaner) will clear out all temp folders for all user accounts (temp, IE temp, java, FF, Opera, Chrome, Safari), including Administrator, All Users, LocalService, NetworkService, and any other accounts in the user folder. It also cleans out the %systemroot%\temp folder and checks for .tmp files in the %systemdrive% root folder, %systemroot%, and the system32 folder (both 32bit and 64bit on 64bit OSs). It shows the amount removed for each location found (in bytes) and the total removed (in MB). Before running, it will stop Explorer and all other running apps. When finished, if a reboot is required the user must reboot to finish clearing any in-use temp files.

TFC only cleans temp folders. TFC will not clean URL history, prefetch, or cookies. Depending on how often someone cleans their temp folders, their system hardware, and how many accounts are present, it can take anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or more. TFC will completely clear all temp files where other temp file cleaners may fail. TFC requires a reboot immediately after running. Be sure to save any unsaved work before running TFC.

Try running HouseCall afterwards, if that doesn't work, I would assume it is a software problem. Maybe Trend Micro will now how to help.

let me know if this improves anything.

myrti,
I ran TFC and rebooted and then ran HouseCall. I got the same error message in the same place.
Could it be a Microsoft C++ error or is Trend Micro the problem, or is there a way to tell?
Anyway, I guess I'll check with Trend Micro.

thx

Hi,

this should be a case for the support team of housecall, not windows. Before you leave I would like you to remove the remaining programs we used:

Read those last few lines, in order to keep your pc safe and clean:
Please do the following to clean up your PC:
  • Delete the tools used during the disinfection:
    • Download OTC from the following mirrors and save it to your desktop:
    • Double click on Posted Image
    • Push the large "Cleanup" button.
    • Allow your system to reboot.
  • If OTC faild to remove all programs from your Desktop, please delete the rest manually.
  • Disable and Enable System Restore.
You can find instructions on how to disable and reenable system restore here:
    Windows ME System Restore Guide
    Windows XP System Restore Guide
    Windows Vista System Restore Guide

Note: You should only do this once, not on a regular basis!
You will not be able to restore computer to any earlier than today!
Please read these advices, in order to prevent reinfecting your PC:
  • Install and update the following programs regularly:
    • an outbound firewall
A comprehensive tutorial and a list of possible firewalls can be found here.
    • an AntiVirus Software
It is imperative that you update your AntiVirus Software on regular basis. If you do not update your AntiVirus Software then it will not be able to catch the latest threats.
    • an Anti-Spyware program
Malware Byte's Anti Malware is an excellent Anti-Spyware scanner. It's scan times are usually under ten minutes, and has excellent detection and removal rates.
SUPERAntiSpyware is another good scanner with high detection and removal rates.
Both programs are free for non commercial home use but provide a resident and do not nag if you purchase the paid versions.
    • Spyware Blaster
A tutorial for Spywareblaster can be found here. If you wish, the commercial version provides automatic updating.
    • MVPs hosts file
A tutorial for MVPs hosts file can be found here. If you would like automatic updates you might want to take a look at HostMan host file manager. For more information on thehosts file, and what it can do for you, please consult the Tutorial on the Hosts file
  • Keep Windows (and your other Microsoft software) up to date!
I cannot stress how important this is enough. Often holes are found in Internet Explorer or Windows itself that require patching. Sometimes these holeswill allow an attacker unrestricted access to your computer.
Therefore, please, visit the Microsoft Update Website and follow the on screen instructions to setup Microsoft Update. Also follow the instructions to update your system. Please REBOOT and repeat this process until there are no more updates to install!!
  • Keep your other software up to date as well
Software does not need to be made by Microsoft to be insecure. You can use the Secunia Online Software occasionally to help you check for out of date software on yourmachine.
  • Stay up to date!
The MOST IMPORTANT part of any security setup is keeping the software up to date. Malware writers release new variantsevery single day. If your software updates don't keep up, then the malware will always be one step ahead. Not a good thing :(.

myrti,

Downloaded OTC and ran it.
It took a while but I'm not sure what it did because I had to manually remove everything from the desktop after it rebooted.

Disabled and Enabled system restore and made a new restore point.

Installed the new hosts file and HostMan.

Installed Secunia and ran it and updated as necessary.

I already have McAfee Security Suite and free versions of Spyware Blaster, Malware Bytes Anti Malware, and Spyware Terminator (but not the active resident stuff that conflicts with McAfee. After my mishap I added ThreatFire which appears to not conflict with McAfee.

thx
