--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As a periodic security check, I ran the HijackThis program Sunday and found an unusual entry under Services. I have a Dell Dimension 8200 computer with windows XP Pro (SP2) with current updates (except for the just released MS updates). I have installed on my computer NAV 2005, BoClean, ZAPro ver 5, CounterSpy, Adware SE Plus, and SpywareBlaster. I daily check for updates and have not noticed any serious or minior problems with my computer.

I went back and checked a copy of a HiJackThis log made in Feb 2005 and it did not have the unusual Service entry. I should note that I ran a search on my primary HD, Registry, and checked the temp folders in all accounts and did not find the AM.exe file. In addition, I ran PurgeIE (deleted the TIF contents), NAV, CounterSpy, Adaware scans, and ran both Diamond Autostart Viewer and StartUplist programs and did not see the AM.exe as a startup file. I should also mention that yesterday, under Service Startup Type column, I Disabled the AM Service entry and did not notice any difference in my computer operations. However, this morning in Service, I checked the Startup type Column for the AM entry and it is now set back to manual.

I dont remember ever having installed any AM.exe program. Thanks very much for any help, Sam.

The entry in question is as follows and the HiJackThis log is below.

Hello scams and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. Actually, there are 2 bogus entries in the Services group. Let's remove them.

Now we need to remove a service.

Open Notepad and Copy/Paste the contents of the quote box below into the new document:

Const title = "Service Removal Tool"

Set oWS = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell")
sService = inputbox("Removing Service:",title,"AM")

If sService = "" then
msgbox "Script halted. No changes were made.", vbInformation, title
wscript.quit
End If

strComputer = "."
Set objWMIService = GetObject("winmgmts:{impersonationLevel=impersonate}!\\" & strComputer & "\root\cimv2")
Set colListOfServices = objWMIService.ExecQuery _
("Select * from Win32_Service Where Name = '" & sService & "' or displayName = '" & sService & "'")
If colListOfServices.count > 0 Then
For Each objService In colListOfServices
objService.StopService()
wscript.Sleep 5000
objService.ChangeStartMode("Disabled")
wscript.Sleep 2000
objService.Delete()
Msgbox "The " & sService & " service has been removed or marked for deletion.", vbInformation, title
Next
Else
Msgbox "The " & sService & " service was not found.", vbInformation, title
End If

Save the file to your desktop as remsvc.vbs and close Notepad. Locate the remsvc.vbs file on your desktop and double-click on it to run it. Click the Ok button and wait for a messge box saying the service has been removed or marked for deletion.

Now start remsvc.vbs again and type or copy/paste the name below into the editbox before clicking the Ok button:OFUTMO
Alright, you should be good to go.

Cheers.

OldTimer and Cretemonster, thanks very much for your replies and information. I decided to try Cretemonters procedures first and this is what I found. In the path "C:\DOCUME~1\Sam\LOCALS~1\Temp\ "Name of file" (file missing)", neither file AM.exe or OFUTMO.exe was located at this point. It dawned on me, most likely the reason for the "file missing" entry at the end of the path mentioned above, was because the files were not located at the end of the path as mentioned. After making sure both file entries were disabled in Service, I started up the HijackThis program and went to Misc Tools, Delete a file on Reboot, and confirmed that neither file did not exist at the path mentioned above.

I then changed the computer to Safe Mode and ran HijackThis program again. I noticed with some surprise that the two entries noted above in my original Hijackthis log WERE NOT listed in this Safe Mode HijackThis log!!

So these two entries must only load during the normal windows bootup. I checked the Startup folders for Administrator, All Users, and the other two profiles and neither of the files in question were listed. I searched C:\ again and did not find either file listed on the HD. I decide to search the registry and found eleven entries for the OFUTMO.exe: example of one of the entries -
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\OFUTMO

The registry search for the AM.exs file, I found five entries and an example of one:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AM

In the registry, I also searched the following registry entries and did not find any reference to the two files in question.

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run, RunOnce, RunOnceEx, Run Service, and RunServiceOnce.

I should note that yesterday and this morning, I ran a full scan with the latest definitions for NAV 2005, CounterSpy, and Adware SE Plus. I also made sure that I had the latest definitions for BoClean and SpywareBlaster programs as well. No malware was found.

I decided I had better report back to you all for further thoughts and suggestions. Below is the HijackThis log that was completed in Safe Mode. Thanks again for your help, Sam.

If you can locate those registry entries again,please remove them!

Have HijackThis fix these entries

F3 - REG:win.ini: load=

F3 - REG:win.ini: run=

Restart in Safe Mode and Run WinPFind!

Restart Normal and Post the results please!

Cretemonster, many thanks for your help. I deleted the two registry entries without any problems (However I did make backup registery entries for each entry I deleted). I also ran the WinPfind program and the log is listed below.

I have question about the two entries that you recommended be removed by the HijackThis program: F3 - REG:win.ini:l oad= and F3 - REG:win.ini: run=. I checked the registry and there were no program entries for these two listings. Would HijackThis program remove these lines even if there are no programs listed to run? Should these two entries be completely removed for safety reasons? Thanks for any clarification on these two line entries.

I think I know what caused the two unusual Service entries: AM.exe and UFOtMO.exe. I suspect it is due to the recently run scans of the Sysinternals RootKit Revealer program. I ran it this morning and noticed a new unusual Service entry. If I remember correctly, one of the features of the RootKit Revealer is to change the name of one of its files periodically so as to keep malware from keying on just the same name.

If you don't mind I am including a copy of my latest HjackThis log for your review also to make sure I don't have any malware on my computer. This sure has been a learning experience for me! Will continue to read and try to understand what is going on in my computer.

Thanks again for your help, Sam.
