My wife's PC caught something earlier this week. She immediately ran an AVG and a SpyBot scan on it but this did not remedy the problem. Last night I identified the culprit (Internet Security 2010, whee). This morning I managed to remove Internet Security 2010 and a variety of trojans, rootkits, and such through the use of a combination of the instructions on this site and one other, basically:

Process So Far
  • (Unplugged ethernet and transferred files manually from a clean PC via a USB thumbdrive)
  • Reset some registry, userinit, etc
  • Killed a number of processes (via a script)
  • Scanned and fixed with Spyware Doctor (reboot)
  • Scanned again with SpyBot and then Malwarebytes (some minor additions/corrections) (reboot)
  • Manually checked a few items but everything was scanning clean
  • plugged PC ethernet in and opened browser, searched for a couple common antivirus sites, all of them redirected to bad addresses or fake search sites
  • unplugged, scanned with everything again, found a few new entries
Remaining Issues
So this is where i am stuck now, the current issues are:
  • After about 10 minutes various parts of the UI stop responding. First the explorer bar, then the desktop, then finally any open explorer windows will stop responding - moving open explorer windows prior to freezing will leave refresh trails on the desktop
  • TaskManager will start reporting 0% cpu usage at some point, even System and System Idle stop reporting a CPU usage percentage
  • Taskmanager stops opening after the first few minutes (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), I don't think I can get Ctrl+Alt+Del to work at all (not sure on timing)
  • AVG freezes up when you try to open and scan
  • Spybot now freezes about 45k signatures into its scan
  • Malwarebytes scans but finds nothing
  • Spyware Doctor scans and finds nothing
  • DDS report runs (see below and attached)
  • RootRelease freezes and stops responding within 30-45 seconds of starting a scan
  • Dialog for deleting files/clearing recycle bin shows green background behind animation (as do a coupel others, can't remember specifics)
  • Desktop is not altered, icons are all there, etc
I've run out of ideas on what to look at next and I'm more of an advanced power user than systems expert, so I'm at a loss at this point. I suppose it's possible that it's just unhappy at having so many scanners running simultaneously, but the fact that the browser still redirect (Firefox) suggest to me something is hijacking DNS queries still.

DDS Report follows:

Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.
