Good evening all, I hope you can help me work out what's going on with my laptop! I am concerned I have picked up some kind of malware, but not sure.

As of about 1 week ago, I started getting some odd behaviour on shutdown. After selecting "log off" or "turn off", an End Task dialog box appears with the following message:

"Program xxx is not responding." with an option to "End Task".

Where xxx is always a 3-character name, apparently composed of random letters and numbers, and different with each session. I have noticed that within a single session, if I cancel the shutdown and then try again, I get the same program name not responding. Examples of the names include "188", "d88", "b5c" and similar. I've checked Task Manager and cannot find any process with this name running - which really worries me, as I can't imagine anything harmless would hide itself like this. I've also looked in the "Add/remove Programs" dialog and nothing matching the names I've seen is listed there either.

I've been running ESET NOD32 Antivirus and ZoneLabs ZoneAlarm free version for the last couple of years. This problem started about a week ago when NOD32 began warning that my license was about to expire. At this point I hunted around a bit to see if NOD32 was still the best solution, uninstalled NOD32 and installed a trial version of G Data Antivirus. This required me to uninstall ZoneAlarm. G Data found nothing after a full system scan.

I've scanned with HouseCall a couple of times, getting 1-2 rootkit hits and a generic trojan hit (all of which I've 'fixed'). HouseCall now produces a clean scan. I've also uninstalled G Data and gone back to a trial version of ESET SmartSecurity (which I like as it includes quite a nice firewall). A full system scan with that also produces a clean bill of health. However, I'm still getting the "Program xxx is not responding" messages on shutdown!

Any advice (or an explanation of what is happening) would be very gratefully accepted!
