Hi, I just acquired a Compaq Presario SR1403WM w/ AMD Sempron & WinXP. The unit is about 5 years old. When attempting to start the computer, I get this message on the monitor after the Compaq logo comes up:
Couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition1
NTLDR: Couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition1

Any clues as to what might be the problemo here? Hopefully, . . . yes

Thanks, Kirk

If you are comfortable opening your pc cabinet, can you tell us if the hard disk is the primary IDE device?

It appears to be. There is only one drive in there. Here is some info that I found online pertaining to this model:
Compaq Presario
Let me know if I need to be more helpful. Again, all I saw was the one drive in there.

I meant to ask if the IDE cable inside, first connects to your hard disk and then the Combo drive?
If you can also get to the BIOS setup, make sure the BOOT SEQUENCE shows the hard disk as the Primary boot device.

Next option, would be to use the Windows Recovery/Repair option for which you will need the Windows Installation disc.

Ummm . . . what is a combo drive? I'll check the BIOS in the meantime.

BIOS appears to be booting to the main drive first. I'm hunting down the disk as we speak.

Does this look like an OldGrumpyBastard or what?
