Hello everyone.

I'm helping out my grandparents with their aging Compaq presario PC (brings to mind this xkcd comic). Since the computer originally came with a crap load of preinstalled software it was coming to a standstill and became unusable. Naturally, I (re)installed Windows XP Professional SP3 (it originally came with Home Edition) but now their sound card won't work. All I know is that realtek ac97 is listed in device manager as the sound card. I already tried reinstalling this driver from download.cnet.com. When I click preferences it says the driver is working but the device isn't. I'm paraphrasing because I'm sitting at my home computer at the moment. I may need to use LogMeIn Express if you need more information. Do you have any idea why the sound card is not working with the original speakers that came with the computer? Thanks a lot!
