I have been having problems with malware on this machine for a couple weeks now. I tried to use a restore point to revert back to before I could remember having issues. I was unable to perform the root repeal scan as requested.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

Tokek, I managed to make my computer unbootable, I found a virus/malware/scareware/ whateverware, deleted it and upon bootup it wouldn't go into windows. I was having problems already with it so I decided instead of mess around with something it was easier to just start from scratch.

I do have a question for you though. I am at work trying to remove Internet Security 2010. What sorts of Trojans originate on a machine to download this software and, can they be dormant for a period of time, say weeks or days?

If you are starting from scratch from a malware infection, it's better to completely reformat and reinstall the OS to ensure that all traces of malware are eliminated.

As far as what kind of trojan downloads Internet Security 2010 malware, I'm not sure and usually they download pieces of the malware from a remote site, so as soon as they finish that process, they're not dormant anymore.

If you are starting from scratch from a malware infection, it's better to completely reformat and reinstall the OS to ensure that all traces of malware are eliminated.

Yea I did a fresh format. This new install so far has been trouble free.

As far as what kind of trojan downloads Internet Security 2010 malware, I'm not sure and usually they download pieces of the malware from a remote site, so as soon as they finish that process, they're not dormant anymore.

Ok, I am trying to find an answer for the user as to why he would have been infected. I can't give him a real solid answer, some of the mcafee logs showed something that I would assume came from an email or something similar.

Thanks for your help. I'm sure I will be on this site get info and or ideas. :(

Usualy for rogue anti-virus like that, the user would have to click on a link to download it. Usually disguises itself as a scan that found malware in the system, and for the average user, it's very hard to distinguish between a legit AV and a rogue AV. So it's possible that the user unknowingly downloaded and installed the Internet Security 2010 malware.
