I got referred by another forum to post here after I posted this:

I just picked up a virus about 20 minutes ago while watching a show on Windows XP Professional. I'm not sure how it happened but in the middle of the show a whole suite of warnings and pop-ups came up. I couldn't stop them so I turned of the computer, however now it won't start up. It gets to the Windows loading screen, where there is the Windows symbol and a looping loading bar. After this page it shows a screen that looks like a BSOD with maybe three lines of text but it disappears so quickly I can't read it. I've tried loading both in Safe Mode and in Last Known Configurations mode but neither work. I'm fairly certain that my computer is done for, but if anyone could lend some advice I'd be grateful.

Since then I have started with Disable restart upon system failure and I can read the error message on the blue screen. It is as follows:

Step: c0000135 {Unable To Locate Component}
This application has failed to start because USER.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.
