Yesterday night, I was surfing the internet when some sort of ad-ware or virus had hijacked my browser (firefox) and an info window popped up telling me my computer was infected. I opened task manager and tried to end the firefox process but it wouldn't respond. At that point, I hit the reset button on my tower. Waited for Windows Vista to boot up, logged in, and the ad-ware or virus came up again upon startup so I hit the reset button again. This time I started my computer in safe mode, and ran Spybot. It found a few ad-ware files and so I got rid of them. I started up Vista again normally. Everything was working fine, except when I tried to run System Mechanic.

I get an error box. With the words "A critical Error. [Error: 424] on it. I thought that the virus had corrupted System Mechanic just before I got rid of it. No big deal, I'll just reinstall it. But then, Catalyst Control Center for my ATI card doesn't work. I figure the virus is still in there, so I pull a System Restore to December 12. Still have the same problems. So I do another System Restore to December 9th. Still the same problems, so I run another scan for Spybot. It caught some more ad-ware, I quickly rid them from my computer. Then, I don't really know why, I pull another System Restore to December 12. This is when things start going wrong.

The System Restore failed. System Mechanic, Catalyst Control Center, and now my task manager do not work. In desperation I went to command prompt and tried chkdsk/r but to no avail. Chkdsk would not work. I don't recall the exact message other than the fact that it wouldn't work. It wouldn't even schedule a restart check. I didn't notice it yet, but once I started looking around my desktop my processor and RAM were going nuts. They still are actually. I have a multi-meter gadget on my Sidebar and it monitors both cores of my Processor (AMD Athlon X2 5000+ BE) and my two gigs of DDR2 RAM. My two gigs of RAM are currently bouncing back and forth between 45%-63% usage. Both cores of my processor are in a constant 50%-100% usage. I don't know how many processes are running right now, as my task manager does not work.

My other antivirus program Ad-Aware, does not detect anything on my system. However, Windows Defender and Spybot say different. Each time I restart my computer Windows Defender detects a virus. Whether it is the same one or different I cannot say as I (a mistake) wasn't paying attention.

So my question is, what do I do?

One more thing, I assume due to the RAM being at a constant 45%-63% usage, I could not use the program "RootRepeal" as I received a blue screen each time I tried to. But I was able to get a DDS.

EDIT: Apparently I am now unable to search using google or ask.com

Welcome to the BleepingComputer Forums.

Since it has been a few days since you scanned your computer with HijackThis, we will need a new HijackThis log. If you have not already downloaded Random's System Information Tool (RSIT), please download Random's System Information Tool (RSIT) by random/random which includes a HijackThis log and save it to your desktop. If you have RSIT already on your computer, please run it again.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Please post the contents of log.txt.
Thank you for your patience.

Please see Preparation Guide for use before posting about your potential Malware problem.

If you have already posted this log at another forum or if you decide to seek help at another forum, please let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and taking the time of two volunteer helpers means that someone else may not be helped.

Please post your HijackThis log as a reply to this thread and not as an attachment. I am always leery of opening attachments so I always request that HijackThis logs are to be posted as a reply to the thread. I do not think that you are attaching anything scary but others may do so.

While we are working on your HijackThis log, please:
  • Reply to this thread; do not start another!
  • Do not make any changes on your computer during the cleaning process or download/add programs on your computer unless instructed to do so.
  • Do not run any other tool until instructed to do so!
  • Let me know if any of the links do not work or if any of the tools do not work.
  • Tell me about problems or symptoms that occur during the fix.
  • Do not run any other programs or open any other windows while doing a fix.
  • Ask any questions that you have regarding the fix(es), the infection(s), the performance of your computer, etc.
