Why do I think I have a malware problem: McAfee keeps telling me it's found a PUP, on each partition of my hard drive, in my System Volume Information folder (_restoreiFF17E6B-D5DB-4125-910) It offers to remove it for me but when I click "remove" it spits back a message that it's write-protected, filename A0061577.ini, and is named SAHAGENT. Further, my computer is not able to open Adobe Acrobat, or the Reader, or the built-in pdf feature in Adobe InDesign. There are a few other problems like this as well. Thanks for any help.

here's my log...

Hello outspire and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I don't see any signs of infections or malware in this log but we do have a few house-keeping items to clean up.

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - AutorunsDisabled - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2CDE1A7D-A478-4291-BF31-E1B4C16F92EB} - (no file)
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - AutorunsDisabled - (no file)

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

As far as McAfee finding items in the Restore Points, that is a protected area that the operting system will not allow McAfee to touch. The Restore points can be cleaned by doing the following.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
  • Turn off System Restore.
    • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • CHECK Turn off System Restore.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Turn ON System Restore.
    • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
System Restore will now be active again.

Regarding any problems with Adobe, I would uninstall and reinstall the program and if that does not take care of the issue then post a question in the XP or Application forums and see what they have to say.

Cheers.
