Hello all, I am running vista on a laptop with 3gb of RAM. Obviously time and usage have an effect on performance, but I have experienced a HUGE drop in speed. I have gone through all the basic steps I could think of to solve the issue myself. A small sample: Defrag, disk error check, multiple virus scans/adware/spyware scans, trimmed msconfig startup list, ran ccleaner to delete files, "shredded" free disk space. etc.... the list goes on. All the "free" error checkers out there either want payment to fix the errors or end up being a virus. It's overall performance, most noticeably starting up or using media content. For example, there may be a delay in responding to a command, or video skipping frames and lagging. Oddly, if I run the resource window, this can be happening even while the cpu usage is less than half, or there is not multiple programs running. The first about 5-10 minutes after booting up seem to be the worse, even while cpu usage is below 70%. Obviously RAM is only part of the picture, and processor speed is crucial, but I have been quite impressed with the speed on it up to date, and have really only noticed the slugishness the last few months. I have an AMD Turion (2.0GHZ, 2x 512 KB L2 Cache). The effect is the same with the battery settings on high performance and the performance settings maxed (cpu etc...) Can anybody have a look at my hijack this log and let me know if anything stands out? I'm clueless as to most of the entries, thanks in advance.

I should also mention that I disabled some of the more intensive vista features that can slow down performance (ie: aero, indexing on battery etc...)

Anybody notice anything abnormal?

===========

Hello

While we understand your frustration at having to wait, please note that Bleeping Computer deals with several hundred requests for assistance such as yours on a daily basis. As a result, our backlog is quite large as are other comparable sites that help others with malware issues. Although our HJT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.

Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. In either case, neither of us want someone to assist you who is not familiar with your issue and attempt to fix it.

We ask that once you have posted your log and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your thread or make further replies until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. The reason we ask this or do not respond to your requests is because that would remove you from the active queue that Techs and Staff have access to. The malware staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response, there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.

That is why I have made an edit to your last post, instead of a reply. Please do not multiple post here, as that only pushes you further down the queue and causes confusion to the staff.

Please be patient. It may take several days, up to two weeks perhaps less, to get a response but your log will be reviewed and answered as soon as possible. I advise checking your topic once a day for responses as the e-mail notification system is unreliable.

Thank you for understanding.

Welcome to the BleepingComputer Forums.

Since it has been a few days since you scanned your computer with HijackThis, we will need a new HijackThis log. If you have not already downloaded Random's System Information Tool (RSIT), please download Random's System Information Tool (RSIT) by random/random which includes a HijackThis log and save it to your desktop. If you have RSIT already on your computer, please run it again.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Please post the contents of log.txt.
Thank you for your patience.

Please see Preparation Guide for use before posting about your potential Malware problem.

If you have already posted this log at another forum or if you decide to seek help at another forum, please let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and taking the time of two volunteer helpers means that someone else may not be helped.

Please post your HijackThis log as a reply to this thread and not as an attachment. I am always leery of opening attachments so I always request that HijackThis logs are to be posted as a reply to the thread. I do not think that you are attaching anything scary but others may do so.

While we are working on your HijackThis log, please:
  • Reply to this thread; do not start another!
  • Do not make any changes on your computer during the cleaning process or download/add programs on your computer unless instructed to do so.
  • Do not run any other tool until instructed to do so!
  • Let me know if any of the links do not work or if any of the tools do not work.
  • Tell me about problems or symptoms that occur during the fix.
  • Do not run any other programs or open any other windows while doing a fix.
  • Ask any questions that you have regarding the fix(es), the infection(s), the performance of your computer, etc.
Thanks.

Regarding topic: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/278664/need-experienced-eye-to-analyze-hijack-this-log/ if you could re-open it. Please find included below the RSIT log you requested. An update to the condition: Despite defrags, disk error checking, reg error checking, I was getting worse on startup. After the BIOS screen, a black screen with a flashing cursor appears. Sometimes it's stuck there, other times after 10-20 seconds it either boots normally or asks me which operating system to use (considering I only have vista). Some feedback I received was to run the windows memory diagnostic test. EVERY single time I run it, at some point in the 1st pass (regardless of the settings), without any warning the computer shuts down. However, once I am able to login to vista, there is no random shut downs or issues other than being incredibly slow, even if my cpu and memory usage isn't high. I decided to use a 3rd party RAM checker to see if it would work (memtest.exe). Despite running it for hours and all of the RAM being covered twice (200%), it detects no errors. Yet when I run the windows memory test, still the computer shuts down without warning. I am not getting any system errors or blue screens of death. What do you think? Thanks in advance.:

Multiple antivirus programs can interfere with one another and actually allow MORE viruses to get through. Running two antivirus programs at the same time could lead to both of them trying to scan the same file at the same time, scan the same email at the same time and so on which could lead to conflicts.

Most of the popular antivirus products, when running together, will "fight for control" over the user's machine. It is this conflict that will slow down the system speed and cause various serious compatibility problems. This can also create registry conflicts as well as causing false virus alerts - or worse, missing alerts entirely! Having more than one antivirus program running and "active in memory" will use more resources which will adversely affect your access to files and cause overall system slowdowns.

Symantec strongly recommends that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

See Should you run more than one antivirus program at the same time?

Kaspersky Lab experts do not recommend using more that one antivirus package on the computer as the co-work of two different Antivirus programs may lead to computer productivity and operating system fall. And to solve the problem of Antivirus applications you will need to reinstall the operating system.

Real time monitoring, on the other hand, is another story. When you install most anti-virus programs they often automatically install and enable their real-time monitors. Running two or more real-time anti-virus monitors at the same time is very likely to cause a conflict. That conflict could result in error messages, crashes of the anti-virus programs, or other types of failure.

See Can I run more than one anti-virus program? Anti-spyware program? Firewall? Should I?

Types Of Antivirus Programs:

There are basically two types of antivirus programs: On-Access and On-Demand

On-Access Scanners, as the name implies, run in the background all the time the PC is turned on and running. The main function of an on-access scanner is to monitor activity on your machine.

On-Demand Scanners, such as Online Scans and scanners that run on your machine but are not actively scanning your machine, as the name implies, are scanners that only run when you ask them to run.

Antivirus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two antivirus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash. I notice that you are using more than one antivirus program. This is very dangerous, as multiple antivirus programs can interfere with one another and actually allow MORE viruses to get through. Running two antivirus programs at the same time could lead to both of them trying to scan the same file at the same time, scan the same email at the same time and so on which could lead to conflicts.
I strongly suggest you do one of the following:
  • Configure only one antivirus program to enable automatic realtime scanning and leave the rest disabled most of the time.
  • Go to "Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs" and uninstall all but one antivirus program.

I use avira antivir for my virus scanning, but only kept mcafee for it's site safety recommendations. Any suggestions as to which one is most effective? I know that multiple antivirus can cause problems, but I had both before all the current issues. Does anything else standout that could be causing any issues?
