I get redirected to random sites when I click links. This happens on Google results too. I don't know if it is related but I am also blocked from visiting antivirus sites like lavasoft.com and malwarebyes.org. Below is my log file, any assistance is appreciated. Thanks!

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Also, please subscribe to this topic, so you are notified when someone replies. Please continue to check manually on occasion, as every now and then the email may be caught by your spam filter.
To enable topic notifications you should do the following:
  • Click on the My Controls link at the top of the page to enter your control panel.
  • Scroll down to the Options category in the left hand side menu bar and click on the Email Settings link.
  • Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Enable 'Email Notification' by default?.
  • Set the If ticked, choose default type: menu option to Immediate Email Notification to have an email sent immediately when someone replied.
Information on A/V control HERE

If I don't respond within 2 days, please feel free to PM me.
Please don't ask for help via PM. The forums are there for a reason. Please post in the forums so others may benefit as well.

Hello, shawn60142.
Sorry for the delay, I was travelling back from my holiday trip. You are definitely infected with some malware. Here are some guidelines to ensure we are able to get your machine back under your control.
  • Please do not run any unsupervised scans, fixes, etc. We can work against each other and end up in a worse place.
  • Please subscribe to this topic if you have not already done so. Please check back just in case, as the email system can fail at times.
  • Just because your machine is running better does not mean it is completely cleaned. Please wait for the 'all clear' from me to say when we are done.
  • Please reply within 3 days to be fair to other people asking for help.
  • When in doubt, please stop and ask first. There's no harm in asking questions!
I am a senior trainee, so my fix will be checked by a staff member. This may result in an extra day before I can reply.

I see Viewpoint is installed on your machine. Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This changed from what we know in 2006 read this article:

http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

I suggest you remove the program now. Go to the Control Panel, then Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following if they exist: Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player.

The log shows that you have been using so called peer-to-peer or file-sharing programmes (in your case Azereus Vuze). These programmes allow to share files between users as the name(s) suggest. In today's world the cyber crime has come a long way and any means is used to infect personal computers to make use of their stored data or machine power for further propagation of their malware files. A popular means is the use of file-sharing tools as a tremendous amount of prospective victims can be reached through it.

It is therefore possible to be infected by downloading manipulated files via peer-to-peer tools and thus suggested to be used with intense care. I recommend that you uninstall this program. That is optional, however. If you decide to not uninstall, please refrain from using it until I let you know your computer is clean.

Step 1

I don't see an Anti Virus Program running on your machine
  • Download and install an antivirus program, and make sure that you keep it updated
New viruses come out every minute, so it is essential that you have the latest signatures for your antivirus program to provide you with the best possible protection from malicious software.
Two good antivirus programs free for non-commercial home use are Avast! and Antivir
Note: You should only have one antivirus installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as impairing the performance of your PC.

Step 2

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.

Step 3

In your reply, please include the following:
  • GMER log
  • A new DDS log (you don't have to include attach.txt with this one.

If I don't respond within 2 days, please feel free to PM me.
Please don't ask for help via PM. The forums are there for a reason. Please post in the forums so others may benefit as well.

Hello, shawn60142.
Before we proceed, I have a few questions. Please follow the steps below.

Step 1

I notice you still do not have appeared to install an antivirus program. I do see a few anti-spyware programs (Windows Defender and Ad-Aware). While anti-spyware programs are a great thing to have, they complement an anti-virus program. Without an active antivirus program installed and running in real-time protection mode, we'll just be wasting our time here as you'll quickly get reinfected. Before we proceed, please see step 1 in my previous post for a couple of links to very good free antivirus programs (Antivir and Avast). I personally use Avast for my computers. Please install one if you wish to continue removing the malware.

Step 2

I also noticed the GMER log is incomplete. Can you please check the logfile/and or re-run it per the instructions in my last post? I'll need all the information to proceed.

Step 3

In your reply, please let me know you installed an antivirus program, post the entire contents of the GMER log and please post a fresh DDS log. Without an active antivirus program running, we'll need to check for other viruses every step of the way. Thanks!

If I don't respond within 2 days, please feel free to PM me.
Please don't ask for help via PM. The forums are there for a reason. Please post in the forums so others may benefit as well.

Sorry about that - I downloaded Avast but forgot to install it. It is installed and running in the background now. Fresh DDS report is below.

the GMER log has one additional line item now but there are still only 3. There are no entries below the "EOF" heading. I've paused Avast to run GMER per your request.

Hello, shawn60142.
Thanks for installing the antivirus. OK, first we'll remove what we can see, then do a couple of deeper scans.

Step 1
  • Open notepad.
  • Please copy the contents of the code box below. To do this highlight the contents of the box and right click on it. Paste this into the open notepad.
  • Save it to your desktop (click file, save as) as "fixit.reg" with the quotes.
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"Hotfix-KB5504305"=-
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\browser helper objects\{5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB}]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB}]

NOTICE: This file was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system

Locate fixit.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it.
You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?".
Answer "Yes" and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".

Please reply back letting me know if it merged correctly.

If the windows UAC pops up, click "Yes" to allow you to run this file.

Don't forget to reboot here before continuing.

Step 2
  • Please open Notepad.
  • Copy and paste the text in the box below into Notepad, excluding the word code.
    @ECHO OFF
    del "c:\windows\system32\rundll88.exe" > C:\log.txt
    start c:\log.txt
    del %0
  • Select File-->Save As
  • Select File as Type: All Types (*.*)
  • Save it to your desktop as fixme.bat
  • Right-click on fixme.bat on your desktop and select "Run As Administrator". If Windows asks, click YES to allow it to proceed.
  • A window will briefly pop up then close.
  • A log will open, please copy and paste it into your response.

Step 3
  • Please download MBR.EXE by GMER. Save the file in your root directory. (C:\)
  • Open Notepad and copy and paste the text in the codebox below (excluding the word Code) into Notepad.
    @echo off
    cd\
    mbr.exe -t
    start mbr.log
  • Next, select File --> Save As, change file type to All Files (*.*), and save it as fixme.bat in your c:\ folder.
  • Open your c:\folder right-click on fixme.bat and select Run as Administrator. A logfile will open (C:\mbr.log). Please paste the contents in your next reply.

Step 4

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Step 5

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Please click this link-->Jotti

When the jotti page has finished loading, click the Browse button and navigate to the following file and click Submit.

c:\windows\system32\jusched.exe

Please post back the results of the scan in your next post.

If Jotti is busy, try the same at Virustotal: http://www.virustotal.com/

Step 6

In your reply, please post:
  • Confirmation that the registry file successfully merged in step 1.
  • The contents of the logfile in Step 2....c:\log.txt if you accidently closed the window.
  • the MBR log in step 3
  • The MBAM log in step 4
  • The results of the online scan in step 5.
  • A fresh DDS log.

If I don't respond within 2 days, please feel free to PM me.
Please don't ask for help via PM. The forums are there for a reason. Please post in the forums so others may benefit as well.

Thanks....are you redirected/blocked in both Firefox and Internet Explorer, or only one at this point?

Both. I'm particularly blocked from antivirus/anti malware sites...for instance, I cannot go to malwarebytes.org or update my adaware definitions file.

Hello, shawn60142.
Next, please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply, along with any symptoms that are present after it runs.
