Have numerous pop-ups, despite running Ad-Aware and Spy-Bot regularly, although there was a period of a couple of weeks when they were not run.

Also getting a Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library popup saying "Assertion failed!"

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here's my HJT log:

Hello jhh3d and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download and install ewido security suite. Update the program and then close it. Do not run it yet.

Step #2

Download nailfix.zip and unzip it to its own folder.

Step #3

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #4

Navigate to the folder you unzipped nailfix.zip into and double-click on nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Step #5

Start ewido and do the following:
  • Click on the Scanner button.
  • Click on the Complete System Scan.
  • If anything is found you will be prompted to clean the first infected file found. Choose Clean and put a checkmark in the checkbox for Perform action on all infections and click the Ok button to continue the scan.
  • When the scan is complete close ewido and reboot the computer normally.
Step #6

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.iwioqzywrftpy.net/piylJC/zOXn0u...GUN8uTCOA/.html

O20 - Winlogon Notify: RunOnce - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ugbmon.dll (file missing)

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #7

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\tct101.dll
C:\windows\sp2update.exe
C:\WINDOWS\dinst.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\20nf291t.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ugbmon.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\eiroxc.exe
C:\Program Files\SurfAccuracy\ <--folder
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\FLAW FLAG CAST LIST\ <--folder
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\JOEHOD~1 (a folder whose name begins with JOEHOD)\APPLICATIONDATA\KNOBMA~1 (a folder whose name begins with KNOBMA)\ <--folder

Step #8

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Thanks very much.

In Step #6, some of the items to be checked did not appear, or apeared in slightly different form. The first file listed had a different collection of apparently random letters after the www. The .exe file at the end of the FLAW FLAG CAST LIST item was named frag coal.exe rather than Adminlive.exe.

In Step #7, I deleted a file named C:\WINDOWS\system32\20nf291t.ini, rather than one with an exe. extension. Should I restore it?

The 04 - HKCU . . . Safedartbits.exe item still seems to be in the log file.

Everything else went all right. Here is the new log file:

Hi jhh3d. The nail infection is gone and that's good. What we have left here is an infection called LOP which is an advertising popup infection. In every case tht I have seenthis it has been caused by installing Messenger Plus!. Messenger Plus! includes a LOP installer for sponsered advertising when you install the program. If yo uhave Messenger Plus! installed on this machine then uninstall it by doing the following:

Remove these installed programs using Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel:
  • Click Start.
  • Click Control Panel.
  • Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • Look in the Currently installed programs box for each program listed below and if it is there:
  • Click on it to select it.
  • Click Change (or Change/Remove) button.
  • If you are prompted to confirm the removal of the program, click Yes.
Messenger Plus! (any version)
Now start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.kbiyxxbeuvtvikkue.uk/piylJC/zOX...uGUN8uTCOA/.php
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [1 ante] C:\DOCUME~1\JOEHOD~1\APPLIC~1\KNOBMA~1\Safedartbits.exe

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\JOEHOD~1 (a folder whose name begins with JOEHOD)\APPLICATION DATA\KNOBMA~1 (a folder whose name begins with KNOBMA)\ <--folder
If you do not already have Ad-Aware SE 1.06 then follow these download and setup instructions: Ad-Aware SE Setup. Otherwise, just check for updates.

Start Ad-aware SE, click the Start button and choose Perform Full System Scan. Click the Next button and wait for the scan to complete. If anything was found, right-click on the list and choose Select All and remove all it finds.

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

OT
I do not respond to PM's requesting help. That's what the forums are here for. Please use them so that others may benefit from your questions and the responses you receive.

Thanks again.

I did not find any instances of Messenger Plus! in the Add/Remove Program list. But the Ad-Aware full scan did not turn up any LOP programs, either. The only harmful item it found was VX-2, with a TAG rating of 10. The rest were tracking cookies and negligible objects.

Here's the latest HJT log file:

Hi jhh3d. that log looks clean. good job! How are things running? Any more problems?

The LOP entries were the ones that we removed and deleted. AdAware would have found any further entries that were not showing in the log.

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
  • CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
  • Turn off System Restore.
    • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • CHECK Turn off System Restore.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Turn ON System Restore.
    • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You already have a good firewall and a good antivirus application intalled and running. It is important to have both to protect your system, and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit Microsoft Windows Update monthly. Microsoft puts out new updates on the 2nd Tuesday of every month so be sure to check regularly.

And to keep your system clean be aware of what emails you open, what websites you visit, and update and run these free malware scanners once a week:To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!

Thanks for all of your invaluable help. The system has been working fine.

. . . until I downloaded and installed SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard this morning.

A toolbar we used to get reappeared, and pop-ups reappeared. Ad-Aware and SpyBot checks I just ran came up clean.

Here's the latest HJT log file:

Hi jhh3d. It looks like you have another LOP infection. Update AdAware SE and run a full system scan. AdAware is good at removing those.

Cheers.

Hope this will be the last time I have to bother you.

Yesterday Ad-Aware didn't find anything other than tracking cookies and a couple of MRU list items, but SpyBot found and deleted some WinFixer and I think DSO Exploit (which it found and deleted again this morning) files. Still getting some popups ("Powered by ZEDO" registry cleanups and others).

Do I need to remove this file that's on the HJT log file?:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [cast list dumb intra] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\FLAW FLAG CAST LIST\playclock.exe

If so, should I delete any ". . . \FLAW FLAG CAST LIST\ . . ." files that show up, using the instructions you gave me before?

Thanks again.

Hijhh3d. SpywareBlaster will always find the DSO exploit. that's a bug in SpywareBlaster. The 04 item is still a LOP infection. Let's try this scanner and see what it shows.

Download WinPFind.zip and unzip the contents to the C:\ folder.

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Locate the c:\winpfind\winpfind.exe file and double-click it to run it. Now click the Start Scan button to begin the scan.

When the scan is complete reboot normally and post the WinPFind.txt file (located in the WinPFind folder) back here along with a new HijackThis log and I will review the information when it comes in.

Thanks for taking a further look.

Here's the WinPFind log:

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Hi jhh3d. Yes, that uncovered a few more items. let's see if we can't remove them. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download the Pocket Killbox and unzip the contents of KillBox.zip to your desktop.

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

Step #2
  • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into the new document

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent\Post Platform]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent\Post Platform]
"SV1"=""
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Approved]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"1 ante"=-
"Aida"=-

  • Save the document to your desktop as fixreg.reg and close Notepad.
  • Locate the fixreg.reg file on your desktop and right-click on it
  • Choose Merge from the popup menu and answer Yes or Ok to any further prompts. You should get a message that the file was merged successfully.
Step #3
  • Double-click on KillBox.exe to launch the program.
  • Highlight the files in bold below and press the Ctrl key and the C key at the same time to copy them to the clipboard
    • C:\WINDOWS\setup_silent_15139.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\4v8jd1bc.ini
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\agtttsa.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msdjgk.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msiaih.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\n9iarb62.ini
      C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\8570495B9DD3F2CB.job
      C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\BD757F0197F2E7CD.job
      C:\Documents and Settings\Alek Hodges\Application Data\Sskuknwrd.dll
      C:\PROGRA~1\CAMPBO~1\creative great.dll
      C:\DOCUME~1\ALEKHO~1\APPLIC~1\KNOBMA~1\Safedartbits.exe
      C:\Documents and Settings\Alek Hodges\Application Data\eetu.exe
      C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\FLAW FLAG CAST LIST\playclock.exe
  • In Killbox click on the File menu and then the Paste from Clipboard item
  • In the Full Path of File to Delete field drop down the arrow and make sure that all of the files are listed
  • Click the option to Delete on Reboot
  • If not greyed out click the checkbox for Unregister .dll Before Deleting
  • Now click on the red button with a white 'X' in the middle to delete the files
  • Click Yes when it says all files will be deleted on the next reboot
  • Click Yes when it asks if you want to reboot now
  • If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just reboot manually
Step #4
  • After the system reboots, start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:
    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [cast list dumb intra] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\FLAW FLAG CAST LIST\playclock.exe
  • Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.
Step #5

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #6

Reboot normally and run at least 2 of the following on-line virus scans:Bitdefender <<<Add a check by 'Autoclean'.
RAV <<<Add a check by 'Autoclean', leave everything else as is.
eTrust <<<'Cure' whatever is found, then delete if unsuccessful
Housecall <<<Put on 'Autoclean' and delete what it can't clean.
Panda ActiveScan <<<Accept default settings
If there are any files that cannot be automatically disinfected or quarantined then you will need to delete them manually.

Step #7

If you do not already have Ad-Aware SE 1.06 then follow these download and setup instructions: Ad-Aware SE Setup. Otherwise, just check for updates.

Start Ad-aware SE, click the Start button and choose Perform Full System Scan. Click the Next button and wait for the scan to complete. If anything was found, right-click on the list and choose Select All and remove all it finds.

Step #8

Now let's check out a couple of other files. Go to the Jotti's malware scan page and use the buttons at the top of the page to browse to this file(s) on your hard drive to submit for a scan:C:\WINDOWS\system32\PYXPNR.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ugbmon.dll

Several scanning engines will be used to check the file for any threats. Please post the results of the scans back here.

Step #9

Use the Add Reply button to post a new HijackThis log along with a new WinPFind log and the results from Jotti's.

I will review the new information when it comes in.

In Step #3, I could not find the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\8570495B9DD3F2CB.job
C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\BD757F0197F2E7CD.job

so I did not complete the Killbox procedure.

I then searched the C:\ drive for *.job files, and found only the "Add scheduled Task" and "Disk Cleanup" files. I tried to right-click to see if they had .job extensions under "Properties," but that didn't work.

Am I supposed to copy "Add scheduled Task" and "Disk Cleanup" files to the clipboard for Killbox?

Thanks.

In Step #3, I could not find the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\8570495B9DD3F2CB.job
C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\BD757F0197F2E7CD.job
C:\PROGRA~1\CAMPBO~1\creative great.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\Alek Hodges\Application Data\eetu.exe

and, at first,

C:\Documents and Settings\Alek Hodges\Application Data\Sskuknwrd.dll
C:\DOCUME~1\ALEKHO~1\APPLIC~1\KNOBMA~1\Safedartbits.exe

so I did not complete the Killbox procedure. I found the last last two when I switched to "Show hidden files."

I then searched the C:\ drive for *.job files, and found only the "Add scheduled Task" and "Disk Cleanup" files. I tried to right-click to see if they had .job extensions under "Properties," but that didn't work. I couldn't find the other two files after searching the C:\ drive, either.

Am I supposed to copy "Add scheduled Task" and "Disk Cleanup" files to the clipboard for Killbox?

I also could not get Killbox to load more than one file. It would only put one file at a time in the dropdown menu. I finally copied the files into the Office clipboard in Word and then copied them into Killbox (except the four missing files).

Should I run Killbox without the four missing files?

Thanks.

Hi jhh3d. You do not need to find the files and it doesn't matter if they are hidden or not. Killbox will find them if they exist. Do not copy into the dropdownbox directly. Copy the list of files from the directions to the clipboard then follow the directions to paste them into Killbox using the menu. If the file does not exist Killbox will remove it from the list for you. Only include the files that are in the directions.

Cheers.
