Does anyone know why when I try to type in my Notepad I keep getting square boxes? I also get the boxes when I open Notepad to look at something I've previously wrote.

ThankYou,

Sounds like you're trying to open a file Notepad doesn't recognize. If you wrote it with Notepad it has probably be come corrupted. Check for viruses.

Are you trying to type special characters or using an unsupported UNICODE?
Is notepad the only software, your experiencing this with?

Those square boxes only turn up when the characters aren't supported by notepad.

I did write it with notepad and I ran all virus software and came up clean.
Yes, notepad is the only software I'm having problems with. I don't know what UNICODE is but I'm typing using regular characters.
Can I reinstall notepad without having to reinstall XP?

You can also replace notepad as your primary text editor.

I haven't done this with XP, but the replacements work fine (I did do it with Windows 9x when I had some problem with notepad).

You can simply re-install notepad if you have your Windows XP CD.

1. Start > Run > type cmd and press Enter.

2. Insert the windows XP CD.

3. Type the following command and press Enter:

expand e:\i386\notepad.ex_ %SystemRoot%\system32\notepad.exe

*Replace e: letter with the actual letter of your CD/DVD drive.

This should replace your notepad program.
