A few days back Avast informed me that it had found Win32:Swizzor. After that, some links from google searches were redirected to ad sites and once a browser was launched, other redirected browser windows would pop up with random ad site for both IE and Firefox. I also noticed that booting to Safe Mode causes a BSOD. I removed the boot drive and attached it to a clean machine (a VM) via usb and ran Malwarebytes on it and deleted a number of suspect things. I've reinstalled the drive but nothing has changed. I've run a number of other tools including swizzorfix3, rootkit detective, combofix (DL'd from here), and cwshredder with no change in behavior. Before I give up and reformat/install (a lot of work) I thought I'd see if anyone here could help. I've attached a HijackThis log.

TIA,
---- Gary ----

Never mind. I tried everything I could think of on my own including a BitDefender scan from a Knoppic boot CD (found infection in Java base, removed but no improvement). I also tried an XP repair install to fix the safe mode BSOD which has resulted in a BSOD in normal boot mode too. I will rebuild with an 18-month old ghost image, not the optimal situation but it's better than a scratch install.
