Several trojans, rootkits, and a virus have been detected and quarantined but problems persist. Malwarebytes was successful in stopping SafetyCenter pop-ups the second time I ran it, but web browser continues to be redirected and "Restore To Earlier Date" function appears to be disabled. Also, I am concerned about backdoor or other major problems since these problems that I know of seem to elude detection and quarantine... just no way for me to know what else is going on.

Ran Malwarebytes several times. Items quarantined are too numerous to list but I can email image of quarantine list and log files on request. To summarize:

Item; Date(s) Detected-Quarantined
Virus.Neshta; 11/16
Trojan.FakeAlert; 11/12, 11/14 and 11/29
Trojan.Dropper; 11/12, 11/16
Trojan.Downloader; 11/14, 11/16
Trojan.Buzus; 11/12
Rootkit.TDSS; 11/12, 11/14, 11/22, 11/29
Rootkit.Agent; 11/14
Rogue.SafetyCenter; 11/12
Rogue;Installer; 11/12, 11,29
Rogue.ControlCenter; 11/29

They are mostly categorized by Malwarebytes as files or folders except that serveral instances of Trojan.FakeAlert and one incident Rogue.Safety Center are categorized as Registry Key and one instance of Trojan.FakeAlert and one incident of Rogue.Installer are categorized as Registry Value.

Malwarebytes was successful in stopping SafetyCenter pop-ups the second time I ran it. I am running Norton, and on 11/16 it found and quarantined Trojen.FakeAVIgen. I just installed SUPERAntiSpyware and it found and quarantined dozens of cookies Adware.TrackingCookies but nothing else.

Logs for all available on request.

OK per instructions I am attaching attach.zip and ark.txt and pasting contents of DSS.txt below. I will try to run Kaspersky scan and provide that report in follow up email. Your help is most greatly appreciated.
Best regards,
Mark

I stated in original email that I would try to run Kaspersky scan. I discovered the in order to do so, however, I must uninstall Norton AV and SUPERAntiSpyware.

Once a volunteer picks this up, if you feel it would be of significant benefit to remove these other products so I can run Kaspersky then I will do that. Until then, however, I prefer not to have to run without whatever protection is afforded... especially by Norton.

Thank you,

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Thank you for your response. Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.

To update you as requested; Browser redirect problem persists. Everything written originally still applies. In addition, I encountered a situation today where screen went solid blank lit white. While attempting to browse. Neither Ctl. Alt, Del nor Alt,Tab would restore display. I had to turm power off and reboot. This reoccurred once, except that screen went to solid lit pale green the second time. I ran live update for Symantec AntiVirus and Malewarebytes and ran both programs. Symantec found 3 incidents of Trojan Horse and 2 incidents of Privacy Protector. One of the Trojans was cleaned. Two failed to clean so they were quarantined. Two of the 3 Privacy Protectors were SefetyCenter related. All 3 were quarantined.Malwarebytes found, quarantined and deleted 4 Trojan.FakeAlert and 1 Trojan.Dropper. Logs available on request. Screen has not gone blank since, but browser redirect problem persists.

DDS.txt and attach.txt attached. Here is content of DDS text:

Hello, MarkSc and again
Welcome to the Bleeping Computer Forums. My name is Thomas (Tom is fine), and I will be helping you fixing your problems.

If you do not make a reply in 5 days, we will have to close your topic.

You may want to keep the link to this topic in your favourites. Alternatively, you can click the Posted Image button at the top bar of this topic and Track this Topic. The topics you are tracking can be found here.

Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:
  • Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools. Doing so could cause changes to the directions I have to give you and prolong the time required. Further more, you should not be taking any advice relating to this computer from any other source throughout the course of this fix.
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
  • Even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I give you the "all clean". We do not want to clean you part-way, only to have the system re-infect itself.
  • Please reply using the Posted Image button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply. Only attach them if requested or if they do not fit into the post.
  • Old topics are closed after 3 days with no reply, and working topics are closed after 5 days. If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just post back here so that we know you're still here.
  • Please set your system to show all files.
Click Start, open My Computer, select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    Click Yes to confirm.

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.
regards,
schrauber

Hi,

Make sure you can View Hidden Files. Also uncheck "Hide Extensions for Known File Types". If you need help doing this, please refer to this tutorial for help: How to see hidden files in Windows

Right click My Computer, left click Explore, then make sure that view is reduced (press the "double-square" symbol upper right hand corner) so you can also see the desktop.

Navigate to the following folder:

C:\Windows\System32\Drivers <----

If needed go to View and click List, to make the file view easier to look through.

Then locate the following files, right click them, drag thrm to the desktop, release and select Move Here:

iastor.sys

Then press F5 to refresh the view, and make sure Windows replaced the iastor.sys file in the Drivers folder. If it did not, let me know here and put the desktop copy back in the Drivers folder by reversing the steps just done.

Either way let me know how you did with that before we move to some next steps.
regards,

Thomas,
I cannot move that file. When I attempt to do so Windows returns the following message:

Error Moving File or Folder
Cannot move iaStor: It is being used by another person or program.
Close any programs that might be using the program and try again.

No other applications opened at the time.

Please advise, Thanks!

Hi,

Please go to start > run and type

cmd /c copy C:\WINDOWS\OemDir\iaStor.sys c:\

and hit enter.

  • Download The Avenger by Swandog46 from here.
  • Unzip/extract it to a folder on your desktop.
  • Double click on avenger.exe to run The Avenger.
  • Click OK.
  • Make sure that the box next to Scan for rootkits has a tick in it and that the box next to Automatically disable any rootkits found does not have a tick in it.
  • Copy all of the text in the below code box to the clipboard by highlighting it and then pressing Ctrl+C.
    Files to move:c:\iaStor.sys | C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\iaStor.sys
  • In the avenger window, click the Paste Script from Clipboard, Posted Image button.
  • Click the Execute button.
  • You will be asked Are you sure you want to execute the current script?.
  • Click Yes.
  • You will now be asked First step completed --- The Avenger has been successfully set up to run on next boot. Reboot now?.
  • Click Yes.
  • Your PC will now be rebooted.
  • Note: If the above script contains Drivers to delete: or Drivers to disable:, then The Avenger will require two reboots to complete its operation.
  • After your PC has completed the necessary reboots, a log should automatically open. If it does not automatically open, then the log can be found at %systemdrive%\avenger.txt (typically C:\avenger.txt).
  • Please post this log

Also please post back with a fresh Gmer logfile.

Thomas, we have made progress, but unfortunately there is still a problem. Web browser is still getting redirected.

System Restore is functioning, however. In order to test System Restore in a manner I thought would be safe I created a new restore point this morning and then immediately restored to it. Prior to my original post I attempted to do this and it would not work.

Incidentally, on start-up I am getting the following alert from Symantec Antivirus:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
| SYMANTEC TAMPER PROTECTION ALERT
|
| Target: C:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\DoScan.exe
| Event Info: Set Information Process
| Action Taken: Blocked
| Actor Process: C:\Program Files\AOL 9.1\waol.exe (PID 3908)
| Time: Sunday, December 20, 2009 2:52:29 AM
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

As always, I very much appreciate your assistance. I will await your instructions. OK here is gmer log you requested. Just fyi the first time I ran gmer.exe it took many hours. So this time I ran it in safe mode.... still took a long time to run but result is better, yes?

Hi,

Please go here and have a look how you can disable your security software.

Download Combofix from any of the links below but rename it to before saving it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on the renamed Combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

If you need help, see this link:

Thomas,

Just an observation that might help you to help me. When Combofix rebooted my pc and Symantec AV was disabled an icon popped up in the system tray with balloon message stating, "Your computer may be at risk. Symantec Anti Virus Corporate Edition is turned off. Click this balloon to fix the problem". The Icon is a Red Shield with an "X" in it. I could be mistaken, but I think this is not a legitimate Symantec message but rather one associated with the Security Center virus. I have seen this icon and balloon message once before when you instructed me to disable virus protection. Since I have been working with you I have not clicked on it, but I am pretty sure I did click on it before that and it brought up all the fake Security Center pop ups. That may in fact be when all the problems started but I could be mistaken about that.

Content of combofix.txt pasted below as you requested. Thanks again.. I will not do anything until I hear from you, but please in your response confirm if its ok to for me to run AV and anti-malwear system scans during the time you are helping me.

Regards,
Mark
