Hello,

I am like many other fed up with Winfixer pop-ups. I would appreciate if anyone could help me out here.

I have WinXP and have installed the ServicePack1A today(read it on a forum to install it).

Also here is my HijackThis Log file. Please let me know what is to be done to get rid of this WinFixer or some other issue I am not aware of.

Hi google75,

Sorry for the delay. Could you post a fresh log for me. It's been a couple of days and I would like to see if anything has changed. Also let me know what you may have done to fix this probelm in the meantime.

I'm also not seeing much info on the-exit.com. Is this something you set your search pages to?

The thing about people

is they change

when they walk away.--Mipso

OK, you've got Wintools/Huntbar to get rid of. Please do the following:

1. Go to Add/Remove programs thru your Control Panel and uninstall any of the following if present:

Winfixer
Window Search
Win Tools
IEtools
IESearch
Windows Assistant
WindowsSA
Search Assistant
Windows Search Assistant

When uninstalling you may be prompted to insert a security code. Please do so and reboot when done.

2. Download Adaware from the following location.

Ad-aware

Install, configure and update it according to the following tutorials but don't scan yet:

Ad-Aware Tutorial

3.. Download and install the trial version of Ewido Security Suite.
When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
- Launch Ewido by double-clicking the desktop icon.
- You will get a message that the database could not be found. This is normal-- click the OK button.
- The program will now go to the main screen.
- On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
- Click on Start update.
- The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

4. Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

5. Scan again with HijackThis 1.99.1. Put a checkmark by the following entries, double-checking to be sure that only these entries are checked. Don't be concerned if they don't appear as ewido may have already removed them:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://www.the-exit.com/search
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.the-exit.com

Close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and then click the "Fix checked" button.

6. Reboot your computer into Safe Mode and delete the following files and folders in bold if they exist:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools <--delete folder
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\UWFX5LP_0001_0802NetInstaller.exe

7. Run Ad-Aware and allow it to fix all it finds.

8. This process will clean out your Temp files and your Temporary Internet Files. Please do both steps:

Step 1:Delete Temp Files
To clean out your temp files, click on Start and then run, and type %temp% and press the ok button.

This should open up the temp directory that your machine uses. Please delete all files that are found there.

Step 2: Delete Temporary Internet Files
Now I want you to open up Internet Explorer, and click on the Tools menu and then Internet Options. At the General tab, which should be the first tab you are currently on, click on the Delete Files button and put a checkmark in Delete offline content. Then press the OK button. This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes. When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

9. Reboot back into normal mode, scan again with HijackThis and save the log to post in your next reply to this topic.

10. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Also, it is really important you tell me if you get any errors while running option #1

11. Post the fresh HijackThis, ewido and L2MFix logs in your next reply and let me know how it's running or if you had any problems. Also let me know if you use a private payment program. I'm not sure if the following line is legit or not.

Oops, almost forgot. You really need to get an antivirus (AV) installed. You should do the following addendum first:

Please choose one of the following free antivirus solutions:

Antivir
Avast Free
AVG Free
Bitdefender Free

Download it then immediately boot into safe mode, install and run a full system scan.
