Hi guys. this is my first post. I hope i'm posting this in the right place. I read all the notes before posting and i think i'm in the right place.

My wife's computer is in trouble. It's a dell laptop running windows xp.

I'll do my best to explain the problem.

When i start the computer i get two black screens on the desktop that say:

windows\system32\pump.exe and windows\system32\nvtdm

Then the desktop won't even load right. I can't even see the start buttom.

I see my icons but the screen is white and it says " Active Desktop Recovery" and it won't get out of there.

If i try to open explorer, it won't do it.

If i try to open a folder i get a message that looks like :

This page contains an unspecified potential security risk. Would you like
to continue?"

i press continue and i can browse the folders but can't copy paste the info. That prevents me from saving my files.

I called dell and i got all the restore cds so i could restore the computer and forget about this. But not being able to save the files is what's holding me.

Now, Through that explorer window i try to access the control panel. But when i try to open something ( for example : Add or Remove programs )

I get a small window saying:

Control Panel

The parameter is incorrect.

I right clicked on My computer trying to get all the computer info to send to you guys. And as soon as i right clicked the two small black screens that i mentioned before appeared and disappeared in like 2 seconds. So, i wasn't able to.

That's so far what i can tell you guys.

I would really appreciate your help.

Thank you.

Have you tried using safemode to get what you need off of the hard drive? I would suggest safemode with networking and then get MBAM. Try running it in safemode, clear out what it finds and then run SUPERAntiSpyware.

Keep in mind that SUPERAntiSpyware is limited in function in safemode but run these scans and get rid of what they find. After that reboot and go in to the regular Windows mode. Let us know what happens.

I would appreciate if someone could help me.

If the spyware issue can't be fixed that's fine. I can install the os again.

But at least i just want to be able to copy paste all the file before i do that.

Please someone help. My wife's on my back every day about this.

Thank you very much.

Are the bold letters correct?

I really recommend reinstalling the OS

But at least i just want to be able to copy paste all the file before i do that.

Just remember that they could be infected
There is a very nasty rootlit going around

You can try this application to see if you can copy/paste

Please download Rkill by Grinler and save it to your desktop.Link 2
Link 3
Link 4
  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista, right-click on it and Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.
Do not reboot the computer or you will have to run it again

The only other suggestions I can give you is you can put the hard drive in another computer as a slave and pull the files off of it or
Get and external enclosure to put the hard drive in it

Having grandkids is God's way of giving you a 2nd chance because you were too busy working your butt off the 1st time around
