Hello bluecbryan and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Important
Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. If it is run from Temporary folders the backups and HijackThis itself could be accidentally deleted if the Temporary folders are cleaned. If it is run from the desktop then the backup files and folders can clutter up the desktop and be accidentally deleted. If it is run from inside a compressed file then the backups are not created at all.
  • Please open My Computer
  • Double-click on Local Disk (C:)
  • Click on the File menu, point to New and then click on Folder. Name the folder 'HijackThis' or 'HJT'.
  • Unzip to or copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder (do not run HijackThis directly out of the sfx or compressed file).
Download Cwshredder.exe and save it to a folder of its own. Start the program and click on the Check for Update button. If an update is available then download and install it. Close the program (do not run it yet).

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

Remove these installed programs using Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel:
  • Click Start.
  • Click Control Panel.
  • Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • Look in the Currently installed programs box for each program listed below and if it is there:
  • Click on it to select it.
  • Click Change (or Change/Remove) button.
  • If you are prompted to confirm the removal of the program, click Yes.
P2P Networking
Now we need to remove a service.

Open Notepad and Copy/Paste the contents of the quote box below into the new document:

Const title = "Service Removal Tool"

Set oWS = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell")
sService = inputbox("Removing Service:",title,"Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper")

If sService = "" then
msgbox "Script halted. No changes were made.", vbInformation, title
wscript.quit
End If

strComputer = "."
Set objWMIService = GetObject("winmgmts:{impersonationLevel=impersonate}!\\" & strComputer & "\root\cimv2")
Set colListOfServices = objWMIService.ExecQuery _
("Select * from Win32_Service Where Name = '" & sService & "' or displayName = '" & sService & "'")
If colListOfServices.count > 0 Then
For Each objService In colListOfServices
objService.StopService()
wscript.Sleep 5000
objService.ChangeStartMode("Disabled")
wscript.Sleep 2000
objService.Delete()
Msgbox "The " & sService & " service has been removed or marked for deletion.", vbInformation, title
Next
Else
Msgbox "The " & sService & " service was not found.", vbInformation, title
End If

Save the file to your desktop as remsvc.vbs and close Notepad. Locate the remsvc.vbs file on your desktop and double-click on it to run it. Click the Ok button and wait for a messge box saying the service has been removed or marked for deletion.

Step #2

Restart in Safe Mode
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #3

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\tumod.dll/sp.html#44980

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #4

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\system32\nttf.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\csdwh.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\javadj32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\javasd.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\crhu.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mfcxy.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\ <--folder
C:\WINDOWS\netkk32.dll
C:\Program Files\PartyPoker.net\ <--folder

Step #5

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #6

Run CWShredder
  • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
  • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
  • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
  • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
Step #7

Reboot normally and run at least 2 of the following on-line virus scans:Bitdefender <<<Add a check by 'Autoclean'.
RAV <<<Add a check by 'Autoclean', leave everything else as is.
eTrust <<<'Cure' whatever is found, then delete if unsuccessful
Housecall <<<Put on 'Autoclean' and delete what it can't clean.
Panda ActiveScan <<<Accept default settings
If there are any files that cannot be automatically disinfected or quarantined then you will need to delete them manually.

Step #8

If you do not already have Ad-Aware SE 1.06 then follow these download and setup instructions: Ad-Aware SE Setup. Otherwise, just check for updates.

Start Ad-aware SE, click the Start button and choose Perform Full System Scan. Click the Next button and wait for the scan to complete. If anything was found, right-click on the list and choose Select All and remove all it finds.

Step #9

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Hi OT!

Thanks so much for taking the time to help me out.

I have tried to do a lot since I first posted, including downloading several antivirus programs trying to solve the situation. Not until I was able to get to your posting and follow it did I have any success. It is amazing to me how many antivirus programs showed no problem.

OK... as per your email:

Step 1: Done

Step 3: Because of a tutorial I read about HJT, I had already deleted some of the items, such as the BHOs, and I have now deleted all of the entries that you indicated.

Step 5: Done

Step 6: showed none infected

Step 7:

I Ran Bitdefender and it found two files infected with a Trojan(s)

c:\WINDOWS\popcinfo.dat=>:pgawt:$DATA
c:\WINDOWS\vb.ini=>:rgjrl:$DATA

infected with GenPack:Trojan.Downloader.Agent.BQ16
Trojan.Downloader.Winshow.AK

I next ran RAV and it came clean.

Below is the latest HJT log:

OT... one other addition:

After doing all of the above (in the previous post) I ran Spyware Doctor from PCTools and it said I have 19 infections.

Some were tracking cookies that showed lower levels, but I also had the following:

Infection: Morpheus

HKCR\TypeLib\{DD95F7E2-D1E5-4572-8D89-11FDEF68C30

...there was another reference same as above but with ## at the end.

Infection: CWS

c:\WINDOWS\yschu.txt (this file is not a text file, as when I open it with notepad it is a bunch of undecipherable)

Infection: Altnet Software

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer\Menu Order\Start Menu2\Programs\Altnet

...there was another reference same as above but with ## at the end.

**I only have tghe evaluation copy of Spyware Doctor and can't afford the full version to allow it to remove the problems... hoping we can do it and I can send you some PayPal....

Also, I have had both Kazaa Lite and Morpheus on the computer before, but I have removed both long ago (or so I thought).

Thanks,
Mike

Hi bluecbryan. It looks like TeaTimer might be interfering with removing the entries. Let's disaable it and try again.

We need to disable TeaTimer so it soes not interfere with the changes we are going to make.
  • Start Spybot-S&D.
  • Go to the Mode menu, and make sure Advanced Mode is selected.
  • On the left hand side, choose Tools and then click on Resident.
  • Uncheck Resident TeaTimer and choose OK for any furhter prompts.
  • Restart your computer.
Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {BDF3E430-B101-42AD-A544-FADC6B084872} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {09A2B6CE-83ED-11D2-9844-00104B2CD3A4} -
O16 - DPF: {62475759-9E84-458E-A1AB-5D2C442ADFDE} -
O16 - DPF: {6E32070A-766D-4EE6-879C-DC1FA91D2FC3} -
O16 - DPF: {6FD482A3-7B57-438B-B040-52CAA30147EE} -
O16 - DPF: {83AB6E4D-CDD7-11D3-B5E7-00104B9AFF6E} -
O16 - DPF: {917623D1-D8E5-11D2-BE8B-00104B06BDE3} -
O16 - DPF: {B198A72B-B4C3-42B5-B8DA-B364E76429AA} -
O16 - DPF: {B38870E4-7ECB-40DA-8C6A-595F0A5519FF} -
O16 - DPF: {E06E2E99-0AA1-11D4-ABA6-0060082AA75C} -

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Ok, reboot and run another HijackThis scan. If the entries above are still present then you will need to completely uninstall Spybot Search & Destroy and manually delete this folder:C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\
Then reboot the computer and run the fix above again.

Post back the final log and I will review it when it comes in.

Cheers.

Hi bluecbryan. That log looks clean. Good job! If any of the various scanners picks up something that is infected and will not delete it then just delete it manually if you do not need the file.

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

It appears that there are multiple anti-virus applications running on this computer. It is not recommended to have this because it can cause file access issues and if there is an infection the 2 programs can block each other from dealing with the infected file. I highly recommend that you choose which application you want to keep and uninstall the other one(s) to prevent these problems.

Now let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
  • CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
  • Turn off System Restore.
    • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • CHECK Turn off System Restore.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Turn ON System Restore.
    • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You already have a good anti-virus, and you should also have a good firewall for blocking unwanted access to and from your computer. These also are free for personal use:It is best to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit Microsoft Windows Update monthly. Microsoft puts out new updates on the 2nd Tuesday of every month so be sure to check regularly.

And to keep your system clean be aware of what emails you open, what websites you visit, and update and run these free malware scanners once a week:To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!

Thanks, OT... I haven't had a chance to implement the last instructions... I will do it tomorrow.

I used to run Norton Antivirus, but my subscription expired, so I thought I would try something new. As I delved into the problems on my computer, I started trying some of the programs that were recommended, which is how I ended up with so many.

I will pare it down...

One thing that still troubles me is that my evaluation copy of Spyware Doctor still show infections from some Morpheus and Kazaa programs - the other antivirus programs don't catch them.

One of the files was a "text" file in C:\windows full of gobbledy-gook... it had a .txt extension though. It was identified as a CWS file so I just deleted it. The other files picked-up by Spyware Doctor are located in the registery... I am a bit nervous to be fiddling with the registery, but don't know what else to do...

Thanks for all of your help...

Hi bluecbryan. I hve never used Spyware Doctcor so I do not know what it is telling you. Each company decides what to look for in its scans so you will usually get different results from various scanners. That is why we use multiple scanners when performing a fix.

Spyware scanners will look for spyware but not infections. Anti-virus programs will look for infections but not spyware. They are really 2 different things in the world of computer problems.

If the trial version of Spywre Doctor doesn't remove what it finds then I wouldn't use it. There are freely available fully-functional versions of spyware removal software that you can use such as:
ewido security suite
Microsoft AntiSpyware (Beta).
a-squared Free

Cheers.
