I'm a bit rusty at this windows virus stuff so bear with me. A friend of mine's laptop failed to boot with missing or corrupted file windows/system32/config/system. After running chkdsk and rebooting a few times it magically booted, but then the desktop was running at around 5% normal speed. I've forgotten these types of issues since moving my clients to nod32 + firefox + training, but this is a nasty one that's more than I can fix I think.

I've done the basics so far: run spybot, found nothing, adaware, found nothing. She was running mcafee so I removed that because with it the system was literally unusable (like 5 minutes to open an app) with it running. I replaced it with avg, which found nothing. I also ran antivir, which found 2 trojans I believe, and cureit, which also found some trojans. I also tried nod32, which found nothing, and bitdefender online scan, which also came up clean.

<added>malware bytes showed and cleaned two registry malware items, logs below.
cureit found DSRIRREM.exe if I have it written down correctly, and removed it.

No popups or anything routine spyware/adware-like that appear, but when left alone, the system's hard disk is operating constantly. Also, system seems to be needing a lot more ram to run with nothing going on than I remember XP needing, but like I said, I'm a bit rusty on Windows problems.

Running the rkill.com utility makes the standard windows desktop run acceptably though still slow for an xp sp 3 dell pentium m 1.4 gig with 1/2 gig ram system. Because chkdsk found and fixed errors I debated if the cause might be hard disk damage (hitachi) but running hitachi hard disk tools from ultimate boot cd and seagate disktools (which showed warning of overheat of hard disk in past, but hitachi scan shows no such problem, so that might be a false report. But neither full scan shows any disk damage.

Also, to get things to run at all, safe mode actually was signficantly faster than standard windows mode, which along with rkill speeding things up, seems to suggest a rootkit of some type.

I've also run the microsoft rootkit tool, rootkit revealer, with no obvious positives.

Here's my current logs:

panda online scan log - posted only because it suggested virtumonde infection
I ran the virtumonde cleanup procedures, both step one and two, and both came up clean and no other tool shows virtumonde infection, so I'm assuming false positive here. virtufix showed no infection.

thanks for any insights you can provide.

objectively this system should be reinstalled because the windows slowdown is so extreme to make the system essentially unusable unless I am in safe mode or run rkill

thanks, Harald

I decided to just reinstall, this machine is too much of a mess to trust that it's ever going to be cleaned, but this site is a nice resource anyway. Just posting so that any helpers can spend their time with active issues, not this one, unless someone sees a real red flag in the above data, then it would be nice to know just for kicks, but given this laptop was used by a teenager and has had trojans removed before there's little point in spending more time on this. Too bad I can't just pop Linux on this, ah well...
