Posted 23 November 2009 - 01:57 PM

I've been having all sorts of malware problems lately and they have escalated pretty severely over the past few days.

First I was infected with System Defender, I thought I removed that successfully, but the problems have just been getting worse. Now I get pop ups even when I'm not clicking anything, any search I do on Google runs the risk of the result links being redirected, there is something that is stealing focus from my current window but nothing pops up, I can't search for Windows Updates, my Symantec Antivirus isn't working, and MalwareBytes can't run. And if it makes any difference I've been getting errors that I'm not used to about program icons not being able to display on my desktop.

Can someone please help me?

I did get an error about it being denied to write host files in System32. This is even with me running it as an administrator. And it says hosts files have invalid line breaks so can't report the O1s.

  • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • If you receive a message that Combofix has detected the presence of rootkit activity and needs to reboot, kindly write down on paper the list of files present in the message before continuing, and post it in your next reply.
  • Install the Recovery Console upon request.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Note: ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser.
Note: Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security.

Please do not install any new programs or update anything unless told to do so while we are fixing your problem.

Thanks for the response.

I should have been more clear about what's going on, but I cannot run MalwareBytes. I had it before, even ran in this past weekend, but yesterday I was unable to run it. I uninstalled it and redownloaded it only to get the same result. The error message I get after install is:
"Unable to execute file:
C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe

CreateProcess failed; code2.
The system cannot find the file specified."

Also ComboFix did not prompt me to start Recovery Console. The farthest I got with it was the message saying it should not take any longer than 10 minutes, etc.

But after ComboFix ran I was able to use Symantec again.

Edit : I ran ComboFix again. I started it at 12:25 and my internet connection went down. Not even 5 minutes later it is back up. is this normal?

Hi, jshay13 :(
  • Copy the entire contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad.
  • Name the file as fix.bat
  • Change the Save as Type to All Files
  • and Save it on the desktop
  • Once saved, double click on the fix.bat file.

@Echo Off
Reg Delete "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System" /v DisableRegedit /f
Reg Add "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows" /v AppInit_DLLs /d "" /f
Exit

Please save this file to your desktop. Double-click on it to run a scan. When it's finished, there will be a log called Win32kDiag.txt on your desktop. Please open it with notepad and post the contents here. (Please allow the application to finish. You will know as the last sentence in the report will be "Finished".)

Hi, jshay13

Lets restore the permissions to Malwarebytes:

Download this tool and save it to your desktop. (It is important to save it on your desktop)

Go to Start -> Run, copy and paste the following command and click OK:

"%Userprofile%\desktop\Inherit.exe" "C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe"

Click OK. Follow the steps above and run Malwarebytes.

Inherit ran successfully, but I get the same error as before.

Also, a few days ago MalwareBytes (when it was working) got rid of Advanced Virus Remover, but it seems to have redownloaded itself.

Hi, jshay13

Lets try this workaround: Download a randomized renamed mbam.exe version from here.

Place the renamed mbam.exe in the Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder on the infected PC and launch the renamed file. Let me know if the program launches.

Remove and retry Combofix as instructed above. Allow it to run at least for 40 minutes.

If still having problems with these applications, Download OTS.exe by OldTimer to your Desktop.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Double-click on OTS.exe to start the program.
  • Leave all settings as they appear as default, except for the following:
    • Under Drivers, select "All".
    • Under Additional Scans, click on the "Extra" button.
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • The program will be scanning huge amounts of data so depending on your system it could take a long time to complete. Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Save that notepad file
Use the Reply button and attach the notepad file here (Do not copy and paste in a reply, rather attach it to it).

Loading the MalwareBytes was unsuccessful again. I got this : "Error code: 707 (3,0)"

ComboFix was unsuccessful as well. I let it run for a hour. Last night I let it run all night.

That fix made the computer unbootable. I had to do a system restore for it to work again. So I think we're back at square one.

MalwareBytes gives me error 707. When I try to uninstall it I get the error "Messages file 'C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\unins000.msg' is missing. Please correct the problem or obtain a new copy of the program."

System Defender is still on the computer, but Advanced Virus Remover is gone again. I no longer have avenger, Inherit, or ComboFix.

Edit - I reinstalled MalwareBytes and it worked. System Defender is gone. However, I can't run Symantec Anti-Virus again.

*Note* This is the log before I cleaned the infected files. But they are clean now.

It is all due to the rootkit. Remove Combofix from your desktop and download a fresh copy as follows:

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**
  • If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    • Tools->Options->Main tab
    • Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".
  • During the download, rename Combofix to jshay as follows:

    Posted Image

Posted Image (By just typing jshay, the file will be saved as jshay.exe)

  • It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
  • Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

  • Double click on jshay.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\jshay.txt" .
**Note: Do not mouseclick combo-fix's window while it's running.
