Sqlservr executable spikes my CPU intermittently

Having a strange problem that is making no sense to me. Approximately every minute or two my 'sqlservr.exe' will spike my CPU anywhere from 35-70%. It's maddeningly disruptive, especially when playing games [surfing the web isn't persistent enough to matter]. I don't even know why I'd have the process running. I'm not actively running any server applications.
