We seem to have a very similar problem to a few other people on this forum.

Our situation is that we do not have service pack 2 installed and can't as we have a dial up connection. The connection speed is now so slow that we are resorting to cybercafes to send emails.

Hotmail no longer works (cannot get to login page) and allot of other pages fail to load with the standard "This page cannot be displayed" screen.)

Windows verison is XP Service pack 1 (any suggestion where we can obtain SP-2 on a CD-ROM).
We have the latest verison of AVG installed and running
We have the latest verison of SpyBot installed and running
We have Ad Aware 6.0 installed and running

In our root directory we have the following files:
ie.exe
iea.exe
ll.exe
media.exe
staff.html
trofkz.reg
x.bat

The .bat and .exe files have been rendered harmless by replacing them with readonly text files of the same name.

This was done so as to stop the staff.html window being launched in IE by media.exe (?) and to stop IE being launched by iea.exe and pointing at the website lapublichealth/jew.html (?).

Below is a copy of the HijackThis log.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Richard Peters

I want you to fix some of those entries. Please do the following:

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then click the Fix button

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [blah service] winsysengine.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows media service] crvss.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Win32 Wmls Driver] winitr32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [System Uptime Server] sysentry32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [blah service] winsysengine.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Win32 Configuration] videosd32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Windows media service] crvss.exe
O16 - DPF: {15AD4789-CDB4-47E1-A9DA-992EE8E6BAD6} - http://public.windupdates.com/get_file.php...bd8a1c841fba8d8

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)

c:\windows\system32\winitr32.exe
c:\windows\system32\sysentry32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\winsysengine.exe
c:\windows\system32\videosd32.exe
c:\windows\system32\crvss.exe

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode and post a new log.

Log looks clean...great job!

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.

Hi
Thanks for your help - everything seems to be working OK now...except that I can't access my hotmail account.

If I enter the url http://www.hotmail.com/ into I.E.

I.E then jumps through the next two URL's before coming up with the login screen.
URL #1) http://loginnet.passport.com/login.srf?id=...c=2057&_lang=EN

URL #2) http://login.passport.net/uilogin.srf?id=2

I then enter username and password, the screen goes blank with the following URL and nothing happens.

3) https://loginnet.passport.com/ppsecure/post...=mail&msppjph=1

Any suggestions?

No, but a lot of people have been reporting this problem after getting cleaned of the yeakukz. I will try to investigate this further this weekend and see if I can come up with a solution.

Bit more information.

Just downloaded Mozilla and it too fails with Hotmail.

When trying to access Hotmail in IE SpyBot pops and warns about
"Avenue A,Inc" and asks if we want to block this threat.

If you say not, does hotmail then work? Try disabling teatimer and then tell me if hotmail works?

The full text that pops up when we try to access Hotmail is as follows:

Spybot-S&D reports that you want to download “Avenue A, Inc.”. Thuis is a known threat. Do you want to BLOCK this download?

and we have always responded with Yes.

Stopping Teatime (via the Task Manager or by exiting the S&D Resident) has no effect (i.e. get the Hotmail login screen, but next screen is blank).

Mozilla does not work with hotmail as well? I have received a lot of reporst that people with this virus no longer are able to run hotmail. I am going to infect myself with this guy tomorrow and see what happens. If i can figure out a way to restore whatever is stopping hotmail I will let you know. If you do not hear back about this in a few days, bump the topic so I will be reminded to tell you what I know

Hotmail now works with Mozilla (still no joy with IE). The big change is that we have installed ZonneAlarm Pro.

If I could find out how people are getting infected with yekeuza I would be able to infect myself and figure that out. I have not been able to determine where people are getting infectied from.

Bit more info which may help:

Having a look at the Zone Alarms log the one that jumps out in the HIGH alert rating is as follows:

Packet sent from 217.95.133.135 (TCP port 3977) to 203.79.69.90 (NetBIOS Session) was blocked.

The other HIGH alerts are Fax Service, Windows Explorer and Generic Host Process for Win32 Services.

We also managed to get reinfected a couple of days ago with ie.exe (prior to ZoneAlarm being installed) and during that period we had turned off/killed TeaTimer for a short period.

FYI. We haven't used our (or updated) PC for the last year (since Sept 2003) and therefore I think were infected very soon after getting connected (about 9th Sep 2004).
