Howdy!

I am assisting my mother with a search engine browser hijacker. Luckily I have a separate computer and have been able to do some research and utilize what skills I do have.

The search engine browser hijacker is affecting both IE8 and Mozilla Firefox (she has both on that computer). We can go Yahoo but can't search. It gives the Unable to Connect Error page. We can't even go to Google period. So you see where I'm going with this in terms of search engines. Other sites are functioning fine. Originally she just had a problem that ended up originating with Windows Enterprise Defender. Malwarebytes seemed to take care of that and all was well for a while--it might have been a week or so--then the search engine trouble started.

I have run several fix programs including SmitFraudFix and others. I tried ComboFix but kept running into an error and it wouldn't run properly. I might uninstall that and try again for the up-teenth time. I have also run cleaners like ATF and CCleaner etc to help clean up a bit. Just as a matter of course to try anything and everything I have run scan programs from SuperAntiVirus + Spyware to Malwarebytes to Kaspersky which I realize doesn't find many browser hijackers but worth a try.

During my research I located information that indicated that the host file needed cleaning out so under Run I went in manually to the hosts folder under the System 32 Drivers etc folder. I deleted everything that HijackThis reported in the 01 Hosts which was everything below the localhost line. I saved the file and rebooted. But the those redirect lines in the host file come right on back after each attempt.

At one point I did find a hijacker called Couponbar which appeared in the HijackThis log and that seemed to be gone now after running one of the fix .exe programs I located but who knows if there isn't something lingering.

The only other thing that I ran into is that her Java might need updating but wasn't a hundred percent on how much that might help. Also still looking for the correct Java Runtime Environment Download I need.

So that's how it stands currently. Please find the most recent HijackThis log file below.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE
