Greetings once again, and also thanks once again to all here who've helped me in the past. I'm finally in the position to purchase a new laptop, and although I know pretty much what I want, I'm unsure as to the best place to buy it. Given past experience, I've decided on an HP/Compaq with a twelve (12) to fourteen (14) inch screen, a dual core processor, at least two (2) gigs of RAM, a multi-layer CD/DVD drive, a wireless card (b/g minimum; n would be a welcome bonus), speakers able to project a movie clearly from the foot of a bed to the head of the same bed, an eighty (80) gig HDD (more would be superfluous but OK as long as the price isn't upped because of it), and at least a six (6) cell battery (although a twelve (12) cell beast would be better for my needs). The operating system is irrelevant as I've an unused Microsoft OEM version of XP Pro that I'll install; however, if I can save a buck by buying an OS-free computer than I'm all for it. This would be my second laptop--the first is close to the edge (down by a river) and was purchased at a Circuit City almost four (4) years ago--so although I've learned much about how to use a computer, I've not expanded my knowledge of WHERE to purchase one. I'm open to all possibilities, whether online or in town. Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help me.

I see you live in Thailand. That is going to limit you somewhat and is going to take some effort on your part to find one
If you lived in the US, now is the perfect time to be shopping for one with all of the Christmas sales going on

Having grandkids is God's way of giving you a 2nd chance because you were too busy working your butt off the 1st time around

Thank you for your patience; I've been working today as well as suffering a fickle connection. Anyway,

IrishGrimReaper: Thanks for replying. I'm willing to spend up to $500 US, but was hoping to keep it around $350 US. Also, I'd prefer an HP/Compaq, but after work I'll check your Lenovo links.

garmanma: Thank you also. I'm presently back in the good ol' U S of A, but will be returning to southeast Asia in two (2) months; thus, I wanted to take advantage of my situation while I'm able.

I'm familiar with Best Buy, Comp USA, Office Max, Staples, Office Depot, as well as newegg.com, tigerdirect.com, zipzoomfly.com, and compuplus.com. If anyone knows of anything better, tricks of the trade so to type, then I'm all eyes. I'll check again after work--it's lunch now--provided my connection is cooperative. Thanks again for the help.

Head over to www.dealnews.com/tech and keep an eye on it daily. You'll find some pretty nice deals.

garmanma: thanks for the additional reply; I appreciate it.

askpcguy: thank you very much for the link; I just took a quick look and it seems very useful, and I'll return shortly for a much longer look.

Back for more. I've been spending (too much  ) time Googling and whatnot in an attempt to learn more and find a good deal, and I came across this online only possibility

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+Pavilion+dv...p;lp=1&cp=1

at Best Buy. I'd really appreciate more knowledgeable peoples' opinions on this machine, and I've also a couple of questions:

1) Is having wireless N so much better than B/G?

2) Are an AMD Turion II M500 dual core and an Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 comparable processors?

Thanks in advance to anyone who takes their time to answer my queries.
