From first topic: Link is: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/271418/infected-unable-to-use-computer/ ~ OB

I know I am infected, but unsure about where I would start. Basically:

My computer was completely fine, my Monday evening regular virus/spyware searches turned up 0 results. Tuesday morning I went on the internet, got a few IE popups (even though I use Firefox). Decided to do a Malwarebytes scan and got over 750 infected objects infected. Let the scan finish and was told to restart computer, restarted and the problems started. I completely lost my desktop, no icons and no toolbar; a few more restarts and I managed to get them back but nothing else worked. Every program says I don't have the rights to access it or the computer has the resources to start.

I can't access the internet and any scans I can run stop in the middle and give me the 'system resources' error.

I'm not using that computer at the moment, since I'm completely unable to use it.

Firstly I must ask, is is necessary to save the dds.scr and rootrepeal scanners directly to the desktop, or can they be moved there after being downloaded to another location? I can't access the internet on the infected computer so I will be unable to download them if they MUST be saved to the desktop. I have already managed to run a Win32kDiag scan (attached).

Thank you for any help.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
  • Please download OTL from following mirror:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized
In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

You can always download the files from one location and move it to your desktop afterwards. If you are using a flash drive to communicate between your clean and your infected PC please run the following tool on your clean PC while having the flash drive inserted:
  • Please download Flash_Disinfector and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click to run it.
  • You will be prompted to plug in your flash drive. Remember to plug in the flash drive to disinfect as well.
  • Flash_Disinfector will start disinfecting your flash and hard drives. This takes a few seconds. Your desktop will disappear in the meantime.
  • When done, a message box will appear. Click OK. Your desktop should now appear. If it doesn't, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  • Click on File > New Task (Run...). Type in explorer.exe and press Enter. Your desktop should now appear.
regards _temp_

Hello, thanks for the reply. I tried running OTL, but ran into the same problems I have had with other scanners/anti-virus programs. They run for a few seconds and then close, attemps to re-start them and I get a warning message telling me I cannot access the specified device, path or file as I may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item. When the computer is restarted the shortcuts on my desktop appear as blank white boxes rather than the the usual shortcut image.

General problems I'm having:

Desktop doesn't load on startup. I need to log off and sign back in to get it to load. Only 1 of my icons in the tray loads up (Norton GoBack).

No desktop background (wallpaper) only a black screen.

No access to internet (Firefox, IE and AOL browser all fail to connect).

Applications become unusable after one try (like OTL).

Hi,

please try to run Combofix on your system, if that doesn't work, we will remove the infection manually. :(

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Posted Image

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

If you need help, see this link:

Thanks, but I have a question. You specify that Combofix must be saved to the desktop but that is impossible for me. Is it another case where I can save it to an external HD then move it to the desktop on my other computer?

Hi,

Please follow these instructions to remove the malware manually and post back the corresponding logs to start removing the malware from your system:
  • Go to start > Run copy/paste the following lines one by one in the run box and click OK after each line.

    cmd /c copy C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\eventlog.dll C:\ /y
    cmd /c dir /a C:\eventlog.dll >log.txt&log.txt&del log.txt

A log.txt file will be opened. Please post the content to your reply.

  • Download The Avenger by Swandog46 from here.
    • Unzip/extract it to a folder.
    • Double click on avenger.exe to run The Avenger.
    • Click OK.
    • Make sure that the box next to Scan for rootkits has a tick in it and that the box next to Automatically disable any rootkits found does not have a tick in it.
    • Copy all of the text in the below code box to the clipboard by highlighting it and then pressing Ctrl+C.
      Files to move:
      C:\eventlog.dll | C:\WINDOWS\system32\eventlog.dll
    • In the avenger window, click the Paste Script from Clipboard, Posted Image button.
    • Click the Execute button.
    • You will be asked Are you sure you want to execute the current script?.
    • Click Yes.
    • You will now be asked First step completed --- The Avenger has been successfully set up to run on next boot. Reboot now?.
    • Click Yes.
    • Your PC will now be rebooted.
    • Note: If the above script contains Drivers to delete: or Drivers to disable:, then The Avenger will require two reboots to complete its operation.
    • After your PC has completed the necessary reboots, a log should automatically open. If it does not automatically open, then the log can be found at %systemdrive%\avenger.txt (typically C:\avenger.txt).
    • Please copy and paste this log in your next reply.
  • We need to run the tool win32kdiag.exe again, with the following command to fix some malware related changes.
Please make sure that a copy of win32kdiag.exe is located on your systemroot, that means C:\.

Click on Start->Run, and copy-paste the following command (the bolded text) into the "Open" box, and click OK:

    "C:\win32kdiag.exe" -f -r

When it's finished, there will be a log called Win32kDiag.txt on your desktop. Please open it with notepad and post the contents here.
  • We need to scan the system with this special tool.
    • Please download Junction.zip and save it.
    • Unzip it and put junction.exe in the Windows directory (C:\Windows).
    • Go to Start => Run... => Copy and paste the following command in the run box and click OK:

      cmd /c junction -s c:\ >log.txt&log.txt& del log.txt

A command window opens starting to scan the system. Wait until a log file opens. Copy and paste or attach the content of it.
Please include in your next reply:
  • The win32kdiag.txt
  • The log from junction
  • The log.txt
  • The Avenger log.
  • Any comment or feedback about how it went.

Hi. I haven't tried to run ComboFix yet, I need to know if I can save it and transfer it to the infected computer or if it must be downloaded and saved directly to the desktop.

Hi,

please run the instructions from post #7 instead of Combofix. Sorry for not making that clear.

Finished!

Number 4 tells me junction is not a recognizable command and simply opens an empty log.txt file.

Other notes:

My computer gave me a 'failed load' blue screen when it restarted after the avenger scan, I had to switch it off and turn it back on. I also got a message telling me that to protect my computer "Userinit Logon Application" was closed, and the same for "WMI".

Hi,

without the first step the procedure will not have cleaned your PC of the rootkit.
We need to unblock cmd.exe for the commands to work:

We need to reset the permissions altered by the malware on some files.
  • Download this tool and save it to the desktop: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/...xes/Inherit.exe
  • Go to Start => Run => Copy and paste the first line of the following lines in the run box and click OK:

    "%userprofile%\desktop\inherit" "C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe"

  • If you get a security warning select Run.
  • You will get a "Finish" popup. Click OK.
Please repeat the steps of my previous post afterwards. Did you copy junction into C:\windows before running the command?

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

Hi,

did you run win32kdiag with the command I gave you:

please run win32kdiag.exe again, with the following command to fix some malware related changes.
Please make sure that a copy of win32kdiag.exe is located on your desktop.

Click on Start->Run, and copy-paste the following command (the bolded text) into the "Open" box, and click OK:

"%userprofile%\desktop\win32kdiag.exe" -f -r

When it's finished, there will be a log called Win32kDiag.txt on your desktop. Please open it with notepad and post the contents here.

Did you try to copy junction into your C:\windows folder? Did it work?

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

Hi,

sorry I forgot to adapt the path to your particular situation:

please run win32kdiag.exe again, with the following command to fix some malware related changes.
Please make sure that a copy of win32kdiag.exe is located on your desktop.

Click on Start->Run, and copy-paste the following command (the bolded text) into the "Open" box, and click OK:

"C:\win32kdiag.exe" -f -r

When it's finished, there will be a log called Win32kDiag.txt on your desktop. Please open it with notepad and post the contents here.

Since junction will not run, please try runnin LockSearch instead:
  • Please download LockSearch
  • Double-click on the file LockSearch.exe to launch it.
  • Select 2 to scan your system.
  • Wait for the log file to open up and post the content here.
regards myrti
