Sure, take a read...Black Screen (fixmbr) - http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;314503.

That white dash should be your cursor.

If you have access to the XP Recovery Console, try runnng the fixmbr command. When warned that you have a nonstandard MBR...ignore the warning and affirm that you want to run the command.

If you don't have access to the XP RC, it can be downloaded as an .iso file. The .iso file can then be burned to CD (bootable). You can then boot the CD and access the Recovery Console.

Download Recovery Console, Bootable ISO - http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm

How to successfully burn or write an ISO-image to cd or dvd - http://iso.snoekonline.com/iso.htm. Select the method of burning that seems easiest for you, I use Active@ Iso Burner to do these sorts of things.
