System manufacturer and model?

Any error messages recently? Any onscreen messages when the system halts?

Last time system booted properly?

Have you checked the BIOS to see if it recognizes the hard drive properly?

Do you have a Microsoft Genuine XP CD?

Do you have recovery/restore disks or a restore/recovery partition on your system?

I don't have any experience with a Dell...but you should be able to enter the BIOS/Setup...before anything starts loading for the O/S, I think.
