Help,

I keep getting notifications of Trojans in my Temp file and when I move them to quarantine more and more .tmp file viruses pop up. While typing this a Vundo virus popped up...My son seems to think the virus came from something he downloaded. I've tried scanning with Malwarebytes and my AV program in Safe mode but it doesn't pick up the virus. Can you please let me know what I need to do, Thanks

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Also, please subscribe to this topic, so you are notified when someone replies. Please continue to check manually on occasion, as every now and then the email may be caught by your spam filter.
To enable topic notifications you should do the following:
  • Click on the My Controls link at the top of the page to enter your control panel.
  • Scroll down to the Options category in the left hand side menu bar and click on the Email Settings link.
  • Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Enable 'Email Notification' by default?.
  • Set the If ticked, choose default type: menu option to Immediate Email Notification to have an email sent immediately when someone replied.
Information on A/V control HERE

If I don't respond within 2 days, please feel free to PM me.
Please don't ask for help via PM. The forums are there for a reason. Please post in the forums so others may benefit as well.

Hello, cg444.

Sorry for the delay. Future posts should be much quicker.

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do. If you do decide to proceed, please continue with the fix below.

The log shows that you have been using so called peer-to-peer or file-sharing programmes (in your case Vuze). These programmes allow to share files between users as the name(s) suggest. In today's world the cyber crime has come a long way and any means is used to infect personal computers to make use of their stored data or machine power for further propagation of their malware files. A popular means is the use of file-sharing tools as a tremendous amount of prospective victims can be reached through it.

It is therefore possible to be infected by downloading manipulated files via peer-to-peer tools and thus suggested to be used with intense care. I recommend that you uninstall this program. That is optional, however. If you decide to not uninstall, please refrain from using it until I let you know your computer is clean.

Your logs show that you have online poker programs installed on your computer. I know that you may use these (this) game(s) on a regular basis but I think it's important to note that often these kind of programmes are installed with other unwanted software, namely spyware or adware. Due to this I strongly suggest that you uninstall these programmes if you do not use them anymore or did not install these programmes yourself on purpose. There are so many online poker games out there these days that it is close to impossible to keep track of whether a programme is infected or not. Should you have installed this online poker game on purpose and wish to continue using this, you may ignore this. Should you decide to uninstall the programme, then you can do so by following the below steps:

You can remove this via Add/Remove programs.

Step 1

First, please answer this question. For the DDS log you posted, did you run it from your normal user account? That will be important. The user name was "New User" so I wanted to make sure it's your normal account. Can you please confirm?

Step 2

We Need to check for Rootkits with RootRepeal
  • Download RootRepeal from the following location and save it to your desktop.
  • Extract RootRepeal.exe from the archive.
  • Open Posted Image on your desktop.
  • Click the Posted Image tab.
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Check all seven boxes: Posted Image
  • Push Ok
  • Check the box for your main system drive (Usually C:), and press Ok.
  • Allow RootRepeal to run a scan of your system. This may take some time.
  • Once the scan completes, push the Posted Image button. Save the log to your desktop, using a distinctive name, such as RootRepeal.txt. Include this report in your next reply, please.

Step 3

Next, please download ComboFix from one of these locations:* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. (Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive.)
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Posted Image
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply, along with any symptoms that are present after it runs.

Step 4

In your reply, please include:
  • Answer to my question in step 1.
  • RootRepeal log from step 2.
  • Combofix log from step 3.
  • a new DDS log

How long does the Combofix scan take? because I've disabled all of my anti-virus software and left it to scan overnight and I never received a log from it.

No, it doesn't. It says that its scanning for viruses...I left it on overnight again and the same thing happened. I also don't see the combofix.txt file anywhere. I don't think i'm doing anything wrong, I disabled my AV programs and I don't touch it while its running.

OK, it shouldn't take more than an hour. Can you please post the Root Repeal log?

Hello, cg444.
OK, the malware is interfering, or the A/V isn't fully off. Please do the following....

One important note: Please watch combofix and let me know exactly where it gets stuck. That will help us understand what's going on.

Step 1

Please download Rkill by Grinler and save to your desktop.
Link 2
Link 3
Link 4
  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7, right-click on it and Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.
Do not reboot once you run this tool, it will reset the temporary fixes. This program will help others to run by stopping malware that may interfere with the other tools.

Step 2

Please print these instructions first!

If you have downloaded Combofix, please delete it and download again from one of these links and save to your desktop.
IMPORTANT: When prompted to save the file from the link, please save it as CFix.exeNow please run ComboFix using these instructions:
  • Close all applications and windows (including this one) so that you have nothing open and are at your Desktop.
  • Go to Start -> Run...
  • Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

    KillAll::

  • Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as CFix.exe
    Posted Image
  • Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into CFix.exe
  • If it prompts you do download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console please WAIT and do NOT click ok yet , first:
    • Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Network and Internet Connections -> Network Connections
    • Right-click your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection (if you are using dial-up), and left-click Repair
    • Once done, click Close and exit the Network Connections window.
    • Now click OK in order to let ComboFix download the Recovery Console.
    • When prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
    • When the RC is successfully installed, click Yes to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, ComboFix shall produce a log for you (located at C:\ComboFix.txt). Post the entire contents of that report in your next reply for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system.

Hi cg444-

Great, thanks! I'm traveling right now, but will be able to dig into this tomorrow when I'm back. It may be Sunday before I'm able to reply with the next steps. It did find some malware, so hopefully we'll be in a better position.

Hello, cg444.

Good news, looks like CF got rid of the malware I was worried about. Let's confirm with an online antivirus scan. Once we get a clean scan, there is at least one update we need to make to protect your comptuer from getting infected again.

Step 1

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image

Step 2

In your reply, please post the ESET log (it won't have a log if it comes back clean..it will tell you that), and a fresh DDS log.

If I don't respond within 2 days, please feel free to PM me.

Hi,

I have a couple of questions about the scanner...I assume I'm supposed to turn off my other AV programs, right? I'm also getting this error message "Can not get update. Is proxy configured?" How do I fix this?
