From what I can find online and from what Symantec is telling me, I have a trojan called Vundo, and there may or may not be something called 'rootkits' involved.
At the end of this post is the DDS as requested, but whenever I try running RootRepeal, I get a bunch of different errors, such as: "Error - invalid PE image found!". This keeps happening even after I try downloading it again.

Symptoms that I am experiencing:
Popups
Fake messages for Personal Guard 2009
Symantec AntiVirus will not launch, or if it does, it will say that it had an error loading a module. (The startup quickscan still seems to work ok, It knows I have a trojan called vundo but it can never remove it.)
MalewareBytes will not launch
Windows Defender does not launch.
When I click a random link in my browser, it will redirect me to a different site about 1 out of 10 times (not the site I wanted to go to!)
There is a tray icon impersonating Windows Security Center that keeps telling me that Personal Guard 2009 is inactive and that this is a security risk. Today I found a shortcut on my desktop for it that was not there before. I have never downloaded or paid for or used Personal Guard 2009!
Various programs will not launch (such as WinSCP)

This is all very frustrating. This same kindof thing happened last year, but I was able to get rid of it by using Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, which does not work anymore.

Before this all happened, I noticed that Windows defender could not upload its definitions file, so on a hunch I made sure I updated Malwarebytes with the intention of running a scan in a couple of hours. I then closed it. A few hours later when I tried to open Malwarebytes again, it says it is looking for the file mbam.exe. But that file no longer seems to exist, no matter how many times I re-install it.

I really hope someone can help me. I am a college student and this is starting to impact my grades because I can't access certain programs.
Thank you,

-Sam

Thanks for your time. Fortunately Symantec was able to make a little headway against the virus and I was once again able to install and run Malwarebytes. As far as I can tell, the problem has been fixed.
