I received the Koobface virus on facebook by opening what I thought was a video from a facebook friend of mine on the FB e-mail system. When I clicked on the link for the video, I received a msg similiar to what I have seen in the past of how Quicktime needs an additional file and once I clicked that I received the payload of a Windows looking Explorer screen showing files highlighted in red and blinking with a msg telling me I need to install a cyber security product. Also, the virus started sending the video to my FB friends from me on the FB email system. I have since halted my FB account and that has stopped the e-mails, but I continue to get the Explorer-looking screen pop up every 15 minutes or so. I ran Mcafee and Windows anti-virus. They both say they found the trojan horses and removed them but the problem persists. I backed up my computer files to our network drive at home. I found some help on the internet on this virus and looked for several processes and files namely fbtre6.exe, mstre6.exe, id08.exe and Ld12.exe. I did not find these but found a suspicious process in the Task Manager named freddy72.exe. I stopped the process at work on my laptop and also deleted the registry value in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run\freddy72.exe. This seemed to fix everything until I booted up my machine at home. I immediately started to receive the payload again but could not find the process freddy72 on my machine. I ran cclean and mvregclean and it still kept occurring. I found an article about this virus that says that the worm can get in your network drive. I turned off the network drive. I also found another suspicious process called pp12.exe. I turned it off on my laptop at work (did not remove it from the registry yet) and the problem stopped. When I got home I booted up my machine (the network drive is still off) , the process pp12.exe loaded again and now, the virus is trying to launch the payload but I am getting a blank IE screen where it states the link is broken www.gamalco.com. To make things even creepier, today I received a msg from FB (even though my account is suspended) and it is in HTML, but you can read the msg in the body "I am tickled I gave the professor an assignment he he". I am listed as a professor on FB. I am thinking that if I stop the process pp12.exe and remove it from the registry it will stop the problem again - until I turn on the network drive. My husband also runs a Windows laptop and a Mac laptop and uses the same network drive and is not experiencing any problems, so there must be some sort of residual file left on my laptop that I cannot find. Please help get this nutcase out of my life :( I have pasted in the DDS.txt below and have attached the Attach.txt, Ark.txt and the log from hijackthis. Thanks so much for any assistance you can provide. Vicki

Hi,

* Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • In case you already used MBAM previously, please update it before proceeding with the scan. To do this, click the "Update" tab and click the "Check For updates" button.
  • Once the program has loaded and updates were downloaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

In case you can't connect to a page in your Internet afterwards, go to IE: Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab ->Lan Settings > uncheck "use a proxy server" and check to "Automatically detect settings".
In Firefox in Tools Menu -> Options... -> Advanced Tab -> Network Tab -> "Settings" under Connection.

Hello Miekiemoes,

I clicked on the link you provided for malwarebytes and then selected "download now". I was prompted to either run or save the file, I selected "run" to run mbam-setup.exe. After running a while the first time, I received the msg "The setup files are corrupt. Please obtain a new copy of the program". If I try and run again,I get the same msg very quickly.

Hi,

Please choose to save the installer on your desktop and run it from there.
If you're still getting the same error, then I fear that you may also be dealing with a file infector. I really hope this is not the case here though...

Hi,

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=localhost:8080
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {3EBBD0F6-1F1F-48A0-89DC-C7505D56E92A} - (no file)

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Let me know in your next reply how things are now.

Hello Miekiemoes,

Everything looks and good and things appears stable on my laptop. Should I try turning on the network drive and see what happens? I believe the worm may have infected it as well which is why I kept getting re-infected. Do you have any suggestions on how I can clean up the network drive?

I am out of town until Sunday without access to the Internet so I wil check for your reply then.

Thanks so much for all your help. You are the God (or Godess) of Geekdom :(

Hi,

This one doesn't spread via networks though, so you *should be OK :(

Glad I could help. :(

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.
Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again!
