Problem:

At startup after entering my logon data, I get the application error message "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application." twice in quick succession.

I then get my background image but no desktop. ALT-CTRL-DEL brings up the Task Manager and from there I can successfully run any programs I like. Trying to run explorer.exe brings up the error message again.

System:

Windows XP Professional SP3
Lenovo 3000 N200 0769 BLG

Intel Pentium Duo T2300 1.66Ghz 533Mhz FSB 1MB L2 Cache
1024MB DDR2-667 SO-Dimm Memory (1x1024)
120GB SATA 5400rpm Hard Drive, 15.4" WXGA VibrantView (1280x800 resolution) TFT LCD Display
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 shared graphics
DVD Writer DL optical drive
802.11a/b/g wireless LAN
10/100 Ethernet LAN
6 cell battery
5-in-1 Card reader
Bluetooth
Fingerprint Reader

What had I been upto:

I have been cleaning up my PC. I was simultaneously (I know) running MyDefrag to defragment and Revo Uninstaller to unistall old applications.

In the course of this, the system stalled and explorer.exe crashed leaving MyDefrag running. I closed this and rebooted, which is when the problem began.

I have used System Restore to go back one point system point but to no avail.

Any and all help gratefully received. Thanks in advance.
