Hello. Our home computer, running Windows XP Home SP2 has picked up the Security Tool Virus, with all the typical symptoms. I read the article by Grinler and followed the instructions, and was able to "kill" the program using Process Explorer. I was able to download the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware file mbam-setup, but after running it, the mbam.exe file is missing, and the message comes up saying, "Unable to execute file: C:\program files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe Create process failed; code 2. The system cannot find the file specified." If I try to run it from start-all programs-Malwarebyte-Antimalware, the computer searches for the .exe file but can't find it. I tried changing the file and extension names on the set-up file, but it didn't make any difference. I downloaded Windows Defender, and it seemed to remove Security Shield, but it came back on the next startup. If Defender is on at start-up, it reports finding a Trojan:Win32/winwebsec, and when I click remove all, it shuts down Security Tool, but on the next start up, it's back. Another aspect is pop-ups when using Firefox, also the browser gets redirected to other ad sites.
I have run full scans with Windows Defender and also Avast and have gotten rid of some infected files that way, but the basic problem hasn't changed. Thanks so much for your help! Let me know if additional information would be helpful or if I should post this in a different forum.

Let's try a modified sequence for scans

:flowers: Please download TFC by Old Timer and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!
  • Double-click on TFC.exe to run it. If you are using Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.
  • Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately. If not prompted, manually reboot the machine anyway to ensure a complete clean.
 Please download RKill by Grinler

Link #1
Link #2
Link #3
Link #4

  • Before we begin, you should disable your anti-malware softwares you have installed so they do not interfere RKill running as some anti-malware softwares detect RKill as malicious. Please refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Download Link #1.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click the RKill desktop icon.
If you are using Vista please right click and run as Admin!
  • A black screen will briefly flash indicating a successful run.
  • If this does not occur please delete that application and download Link #2.
  • Continue process until the tool runs.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links tell me about it.
Please download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If it will not start, go to Start > All Prgrams > SUPERAntiSpyware and click on Alternate Start.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here. Double-click on the hyperlink for Download Installer and save SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to your desktop. Then double-click on SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to install the definitions.)
  • In the Main Menu, click the Preferences... button.
  • Click the "General and Startup" tab, and under Start-up Options, make sure "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts" box is unchecked.
  • Click the "Scanning Control" tab, and under Scanner Options, make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program.
  • Do not run a scan just yet.
Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with SUPERAntiSpyware as follows:
  • Launch the program and back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan and click "Next".
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.
Now try running Malwarebytes in Full Mode...

As an alternate...
One way to resolve this is to download and install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware on a non-infected computer.
  • After installation, open Windows Explorer and navigate to the C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\ folder where mbam.exe is located.
  • Copy the mbam.exe file to the Desktop and rename it to wuauclt.exe or explorer.exe.
  • Save the renamed file to a usb flash drive or CD, then transfer to the infected computer.
    • Another option is to upload the file somewhere so you can download it later to the infected computer.
    • If you do not have access to another computer, ask a friend to email or upload a renamed mbam.exe for you and provide a link to download it.
  • Place the renamed mbam.exe in the C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder on the infected computer, then double-click on it to launch the program.
  • Check for database definition updates through the program's interface.
  • Then perform a Quick Scan, check all items found for removal and reboot afterwards.
  • Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
  • When done, click the Logs tab and copy/paste the contents of the report in your next reply.

Thanks so much for your help. I followed the instructions, and was able to run SUPERAntiSpyware.exe, which showed many infected files. After deleting them, things seemed to return to normal. I was then able to set up Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and ran the quick scan, which showed some additional files which I deleted. Your instructions were superb and easy to follow. Following are the logs from SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware as instructed. Let me know if there is anything else I should do. Is it OK if I go ahead and do a full scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware now? I also would appreciate your advice on this question. In the process of trying to get rid of the Security Tool virus, I set-up Avast (which seems to be working well now) and Windows Defender (which is now missing a file, probably just need to run set-up again). Is it OK to have them both running? There is also the remains of McAfee on the machine, which we haven't re-subscribed to, but the firewall still operates now. Thanks for your advice. It seems to me that the problem is fixed. So, unless you see something in the logs that requires additional measures, thanks so much for your help. I'm a new fan of Bleepingcomputer.com!!!!

Thank you...

First the question. Please uninstall McAfee if you want to keep Avast. I like Avast and have used it in the past.

Please update and rerun malwarebytes in Full Mode and post the fresh log. Let's see how well we have done.

Next, let do an on-line scan...

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image

Thanks again for your help. I removed the old McAffe. The machine seems to be running great, no signs of problems. Here is the results of the full Malwarebytes scan which did not detect any additional infected files, and the results of the ESET Online Scan, which did detect files. Should these be run on a regular basis? Should I delete files that have been quarantined? Thanks again.

Yes... you can run both of these as needed, or weekly as you see fit. The on-line scan works well because it doesn't stay resident on your computer and can compliment Avast's protection.

Please download SmitfraudFix

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

OK. Here is the result of SmitFraudFix. Should I delete infected files quarantined by Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware? Thanks again for all your help!

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

When the above is complete, please rerun Superantispyware and post a fresh log. Thanks!

Last steps... I think

Please rerun TFC then flush system restore

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name, then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
  • Then use Disk Cleanup to remove all but the most recently created Restore Point.
  • Go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
  • Click "Ok"
  • Disk Cleanup will scan your files for several minutes, then open.
  • Click the "More Options" Tab.
  • Click the "Clean up" button under System Restore.
  • Click Ok. You will be prompted with "Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?"
  • Click Yes, then click Ok.
  • Click Yes again when prompted with "Are you sure you want to perform these actions?"
  • Disk Cleanup will remove the files and close automatically.
Now rerun ESET Online scan. Post the results. We should see 0 found.

Fantastic

I spot check with malwarebytes in a week to make sure everything remains clean.

Best wishes and safe surfing
