So here's a little background about the situation...
My mother received a DELL laptop from my college as a christmas present (2004)
and from day 1, it has had problems. I had the usual go-round with virus checkers and reg editing and such to no real solution. So I took it back to them to format and re install all needed drivers and such...
A bad mistake that was on my part, as it turns out the CD they were using to load all the drivers was infected with any number of viruses, trojans, worms, spyware, adware, and general hateful crap---I know specifically the blaster worm was rampant on campus last year. So here I am, almost a year later with her xmas present that's became a large paperweight, of which I promised I would fix before her birthday (in Nov)... and I'm just now getting around to fixing it. So taking one big step forward..here's the HJT log of the DELL from HELL. Thanks in advance for any help ya'll may have.

Hello,

Go via control panel > software > add/remove programs and uninstall next:

AutoUpdate
Searchrelevancy
Apropos
SideFind
BargainBuddy
BullsEye Network
Istbar

REBOOT afterwards

Download the latest version of Ad-Aware:
http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/

After installing AAW, and before running the program.
Please be sure to update the reference file following the instructions here:
http://www.lavahelp.net/howto/updref/

Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan:

Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.

Click the 'Scanning' button.
Under Drives, Folders and Files, select 'Scan within Archives'.
Click 'Click here to select Drives + folders' and select your installed hard drives.

Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
Click the 'Advanced' button.
Under 'Log-file detail level', select all options.
Click the 'Tweaks' button.

Under 'Scanning Engine', select the following:
'Unload recognized processes during scanning.'
Under 'Cleaning Engine', select the following:
'Let Windows remove files in use after reboot.'
Click on 'Proceed' to save these Preferences.

Run the Ad-Aware scan and allow it to remove everything it finds and then REBOOT to allow it to finish.

Also install Spybot S&d: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/
Update it before and let it perform a full scan and let it delete everything it is finding!!

Reboot once again and post a new hijackthislog.

Thanks for the quick response..here's the updated HJT log after doing all you said to do. But the programs you told me to uninstall had some not listed: autoupdate, apropos, and istbar. In addition, the laptop has reverted back to it's original virus state of shutting down after it reaches the windows logon screen. The computer was idle for a few mintues after creating the HJT log, then shut down. And every boot now loads to windows logon then shuts down.

Ok, to make things clear here... Can you log in or not?
If not, can you test if you can log in in safe mode?

°To get into the Safe mode as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key". Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

Edit... did you use the latest version of Adaware? Not an older version? That's really important to know...

well I can currently log in normally. As for ADaware, I downloaded the most recent version from their main page and searched for any updates to install. The laptop only started shutting down randomly after I used the internet connection on it to download ADaware and S&D (which is what I read the worm does last time I tried working on the laptop on my own, I think I also remember something about two instances of svchost in running processes being attributed to it as well). The laptop has yet to go back into it's abrupt shutdown *crosses fingers* so we'll see if it's still up and running when I get your reply.

Also, I will be out of town starting Fri morning until Sat afternoon. So when I get back I'll check to see what you've come up with. Thanks for the help.

Hi,

(which is what I read the worm does last time I tried working on the laptop on my own, I think I also remember something about two instances of svchost in running processes being attributed to it as well)

Nothing wrong with svchost! Even if you had 10 of them active in your processes.
Please don't do things I don't ask, because it can make things worse.

First question, If i look at this log here, I have questions about the Norton running in the background. Is this version still able to update? I'm pretty sure this is a really old version.
Can you answer me on this in your next reply also?

I see you are running Teatimer.
I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.
When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.
How to disable TeaTimer during HijackThis Cleanup

* Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: IEHlprObjClass - {CE7C3CF0-4B15-11D1-ABED-709549C10000} - C:\Program Files\Kensington\MouseWorks\IE_SPY.DLL (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NAV Auto Updates] navupdaterx.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [7soi3mS] objpperf.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [NAV Auto Updates] navupdaterx.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [NAV Auto Updates] navupdaterx.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MB7sRge5O] nardbg.exe

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

* Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files and delete them:

C:\WINNT\system32\objpperf.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\navupdaterx.exe

If you can't delete them in normal mode, try it in safe mode.

* Reboot your system and post a new hijackthislog.

The Norton AntiVirus software is very old, unregistered, unlicensed..so subsequently, is unable to update. I completed everything you asked to do. However, the file navupdaterx.exe was not found anywhere on the system.
Here's the new HTJ log. I will be leaving for the day as soon as I post this log, so I will check your post tomorrow afternoon. Thanks.

Your hijackthislog looks clean again.

I suggest you uninstall norton and install a new free antivirus and firewall.

AVG, Bitdefender OR Avast are good FREE antivirus.
Never install more than one antivirusscanner or firewall on your system! Several together can give problems and decreases the reliability of it seriously!
Zonealarm, Kerio OR Sygate are FREE firewalls.

Understanding and using firewalls:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...showtutorial=60

Update your antivirus and let it perform a full scan and delete everything it is finding.
Let me know afterwards how things are running.

And I still see a clean log.
Good choice about the antivirus. :flowers:

Did AVG came up clean afterwards? How are things running now? I assume much better?

AVG found 13 infected files, mostly trojan downloaders and one trojan dropper and all have been fixed or deleted. Seems to be working fine now. I installed Zonelabs firewall, Spywareblaster, and Spywareguard so hopefully mom shouldn't run into more problems down the road. Thanks for all of your help. Peace.

glad to hear that everything is fixed now.

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!

Make sure your windows has the latest updates: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

More info on how to prevent malware you can also find here (By Tony Klein)

Happy surfing again! :flowers:
